As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of watching films under my belt, I must say that Paramount’s recent acquisitions have truly piqued my interest. The revival of Republic Pictures seems to be a masterstroke, providing a fertile ground for an eclectic mix of upcoming titles.
Republic Pictures, a division of Paramount, has secured worldwide distribution rights for Jason Biggs’ first directorial project, currently known as “Getaway,” which falls under the genre of action-comedies.
Titled “Getaway,” this movie features the American Pie actor and revolves around a husband in distress, trying to salvage his marriage by orchestrating a staged home invasion during a romantic retreat. Unfortunately, his scheme takes an unexpected turn for the worse.
This ensemble features Meaghan Rath, famously known for “Hawaii Five-0”, Arturo Castro, a star from “Broad City”, Justin H. Min, recognized for “The Umbrella Academy”, and Anna Konkle, who has made her mark on “Pen15”.
At present, the film “Getaway” is in the editing stage. It was penned by Jamie Napoli and Joshua Paul Johnson, and produced by Brad Krevoy (CEO of Motion Picture Corporation of America), Charles Cohen, Jimmy Philémond-Montout, David Anselmo. Amy Krell from MPCA also serves as an executive producer for the project.
The latest acquisition is among a slew of new titles the label has acquired in recent months.
This week, Tim Fehlbaum’s thriller about a news crew, produced by Republic Pictures and focusing on the 1972 Olympics hostage crisis, was screened at the Zurich Film Festival. Paramount Pictures has acquired it for distribution and will release the film in a limited capacity on November 29, with a wider release set for December 13.
On September 5th, Paramount has scheduled a slot for a new release among its lineup, which also includes movies like “Gladiator II,” “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” and the film featuring Robbie Williams, titled “Better Man.
Earlier this year, Paramount brought back Republic Pictures – a well-known movie label that existed from 1935 to 1967 – to more clearly identify and encompass the ongoing feature film acquisition activities at Paramount Global Content Distribution. Dan Cohen, who is also the president of Republic Pictures, oversees this business.
The label aims to acquire six or seven features a year, with many of those headed to festivals.
Recently, Republic Pictures acquired global distribution rights for the film “Millers in Marriage,” directed by Edward Burns, which was screened at Toronto. This movie boasts an impressive cast consisting of Patrick Wilson, Benjamin Bratt, Gretchen Mol, Minnie Driver, and Burns himself.
The label has acquired global distribution rights for the upcoming Saoirse Ronan film “Bad Apples,” directed by Jonatan Etzler and James Sweeney’s comedy “Twinless” starring Dylan O’Brien. Additionally, it holds U.S. and Canadian distribution rights for the forthcoming sci-fi thriller “DreamQuil,” directed by Alex Prager and featuring Elizabeth Banks and John C. Reilly in the lead roles set in a future not too far away.
Among the various films showcased this year in Toronto, we find K’naan Warsame’s initial directorial effort, “Mother Mother,” alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor’s production, “Rob Peace”; Matt Johnson’s movie, “Blackberry”; Mahalia Belo’s work, “The End We Start From”; and William Friedkin’s swansong, “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial,” featuring Kiefer Sutherland in the lead role.
Moreover, Republic Pictures was responsible for distributing Jake Johnson’s “Self-Reliance,” a project they later sold to Hulu within the U.S. Additionally, they also handled Bao Nguyen’s “The Greatest Night in Pop,” which ultimately found its home on Netflix.
