New Tactical RPG from Developer of Warcraft 3 and StarCraft 2 Revealed. Sunderfolk Gameplay Brings Interesting Breath of Fresh Air

As a seasoned RPG enthusiast with years of board game nights and D&D sessions under my belt, I must say that the reveal of Sunderfolk by Dreamhaven’s Secret Door has ignited a spark of excitement within me. The cooperative tactical RPG concept, combined with the unique control mechanism using smartphones or tablets, promises an experience that seamlessly blends the digital and physical worlds of gaming.

Over four years have passed since Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime unveiled Dreamhaven. Throughout this period, we’ve been eagerly waiting to learn about the secret projects these industry veterans were developing. Finally, a month ago, they promised us the first details in October. The day has come, and one of Dreamhaven’s internal studios, Secret Door, has finally unveiled its debut game – “Sunderfolk”. I can hardly contain my excitement!

Sunderfolk – a new game from Blizzard veterans

In the approaching game, we’ll embark on thrilling cooperative journeys as a team of up to 4 friends. Our mission is to safeguard the village of Arden, our operational hub. Each player can pick from six distinctive character classes: Arcanist, Bard, Berserker, Pyromancer, Hunter, or Rogue. The combat system revolves around taking turns and strategically playing card decks on grids segmented into hexes.

As a dedicated fan, I must say that what truly sets Sunderfolk apart is its unique control system. Unlike most games that require a PC or console to play, you won’t be using a traditional gamepad or keyboard. Instead, you’ll use a smartphone or tablet! This innovative approach allows us to execute combat actions, manage our characters, and interact with the world and its residents in a way that feels incredibly immersive.

You must gather your party before venturing forth.

The creators candidly discuss their inspiration derived from board games and tabletop role-playing games like D&D. Their aim is to replicate the feelings experienced during social gaming sessions among friends. Notably, Chris Sigaty – producer of Warcraft III, StarCraft 2, and other titles – mentioned that his team includes enthusiasts of board games who have been participating in such sessions for a considerable length of time as part of Secret Door’s project.

As innovators, we find joy in exploring sources of inspiration and contemplating ways to streamline such experiences for broader accessibility. We aim to bring pleasure to many just as we do. Our anticipation is high, knowing that with Sunderfolk, we can provide a game that’s simple to grasp but difficult to fully master. We eagerly look forward to unveiling this creation to the world.

Even though the game Sunderfolk is primarily intended for face-to-face play with friends, it’s important to note that you can still connect with them online. Additionally, it’s crucial to mention that if you choose to play solo, multiple characters will be under your command simultaneously.

The game titled “Sunderfolk” is set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. It’s expected to be available in 2025. The developers are also preparing for closed beta tests that you can enroll in right away. You can find the minimum system requirements for the game on its Steam page.
