Deepa Mehta Joins ‘Wakhri,’ Film Inspired by Slain Pakistan Social Media Star, as Executive Producer (EXCLUSIVE)

As a long-time admirer of thought-provoking and culturally rich cinema, I am genuinely thrilled about Deepa Mehta joining forces with Iram Parveen Bilal for “Wakhri.” Having delved into the lives of characters grappling with societal norms and personal identities in films like “Funny Boy,” “Fire,” “Water” and “Earth,” it’s heartening to see her lending her voice to yet another compelling narrative.

Renowned filmmaker Deepa Mehta, best known for movies such as “Funny Boy,” “Fire,” “Water,” and “Earth,” has joined forces with Iram Parveen Bilal on her upcoming project, “Wakhri,” taking on the role of executive producer from Pakistan.

The movie ‘Wakhri’ will kick off the 19th installment of Tasveer Film Festival on October 17 in Seattle. The film follows a widowed school teacher who unexpectedly becomes popular on social media due to her candid views. As she manages her new life as an influencer, she struggles to reconcile traditional values, keep secret identities, and care for her 10-year-old son.

The movie is based on the life of Pakistani internet sensation Qandeel Baloch, who was tragically killed in 2016. It has generated significant attention, having been showcased at events like the Red Sea Film Festival, SXSW, San Francisco International Film Festival, Cleveland International Film Festival, and several other prominent film festivals.

The film titled ‘Wakhri’ is a joint venture of Sanat Initiative, Awedacious Originals, Parveen Shah Production, with Deepa Mehta Films Inc. taking on the role as the presenting production company. Produced by Abid Aziz Merchant, Apoorva Bakshi and Bilal, the movie stars Faryal Mehmood in a prominent role, sharing screen time with Gulshan Majeed. The supporting cast features Bakhtawar Mazhar, Saleem Meraj, Sohail Sameer, Shees Sajjad Gul, Akbar Islam, and Tooba Siddiqui.

Mehta expressed his eagerness: “I’m eagerly anticipating the global viewing of this stunning and powerful movie which portrays a vivid, understandable depiction of the struggle against oppression and patriarchy.

Bilal remarked: “Deepa Mehta has significantly impacted my artistic style. Her bold storytelling has been captivating to watch both as a spectator and a filmmaker, and it’s enchanting to know that she felt passionately about ‘Wakhri’ and chose to back our project.

Bakshi and Merchant stated: “Deepa bravely constructs and advocates for daring feminist stories, and we appreciate her help in boosting the strong message ‘Wakhri’ sends in a dominantly patriarchal society. In a world where standards often stifle aspirations and gender is still considered a sensitive topic, we wish that spectators observe the underrepresented, grab onto even the smallest opportunities, and transform them into significant triumphs for themselves and society at large.

The film had a seven-week theatrical run in Pakistan earlier this year.
