Over a million views in 3 Days. This viral game lets you drive a giant mechanical sandworm

I stumbled upon the game Drivers of the Apocalypse, like I do with many independent titles. It’s being created by Jussi Kemppainen, who also goes by Dinosaurs Are Better, and previously worked as a visual effects artist at Remedy Entertainment (known for games like Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake and Quantum Break). The game was already shaping up to be incredibly chaotic a few months ago, and recently Jussi shared a new vehicle design that’s surprisingly become very popular – he even calls it “boring,” but it’s gotten over a million views!

Meet the weaponized worm that’s taking over Drivers of the Apocalypse

Drivers of the Apocalypse is a fast-paced, single-player car combat game set in a dangerous, post-apocalyptic world. Players can destroy enemy vehicles with weapons and perform incredible stunts, like leaping between cars during fights. The game also features extensive customization options for your vehicle – you can change its paint, add decals, and upgrade its performance. The environments are harsh and unforgiving, ranging from broken-down highways to vast, open deserts.

Let’s discuss the customization options. Jussi recently shared a new design on X – a huge, weaponized boring machine he described as a gigantic white worm. The video has already garnered over a million views.

So, the game ended up being a really interesting blend of Crossout and the old-school Snake game. Instead of just shooting, this huge worm actually crashes directly into its enemies. I initially thought the bits sticking out from its body were customizable parts, but it turns out they’re pieces of the vehicles it’s destroyed! That detail has made me even more excited about the game. I’m still hoping they’ll add options to customize its appearance with paint or designs, like we saw in a preview back in March.

The following day, Jussi showed off an updated version of the sandworm machine – it was inspired by a suggestion from Cohh Carnage and looked much more intimidating. However, because players really liked the original, simpler design, it might remain in the game alongside the new one. It’s fantastic when developers respond to player feedback. While the finished model fits the game’s style better, the original white version will still be a welcome addition.

The game *Drivers of the Apocalypse* is currently being developed, and a release date hasn’t been announced. However, you can add it to your Steam Wishlist and register for the Playtest.
