As a cinephile with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the renewal of “Nobody Wants This” is not just a cause for celebration, but a tantalizing promise of cinematic excellence to come. The involvement of Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan, the dynamic duo behind HBO’s beloved “Girls,” has set my expectations soaring like a falcon on a thermal updraft.
The popular Netflix romantic comedy, which posed the intriguing question “Would a charming rabbi and Kristen Bell ultimately share a kiss in a bar?”, fortunately answered with a ‘yes’, has been granted a new season to continue its storyline.
Netflix’s top content officer Bela Bajaria introduced an intriguing development: Previous ‘Girls’ contributors, Bruce Eric Kaplan (writer) and Jenni Konner (co-showrunner alongside Lena Dunham), are stepping into leadership roles for the series ‘Nobody Wants This’, serving as showrunners and executive producers. (Season one was overseen by Erin Foster and Craig DiGregorio; TheWrap reports that Foster will continue as an executive producer.) The duo has already established a writers’ room for season two, delving into the plotlines of Noah (Adam Brody, famously known as the hot rabbi) and Joanne’s (the petite shiksa goddess Kristen Bell) relationship, while also potentially including more scenes with Timothy Simons portraying a parent high in front of his teenage daughter.
With Konner and Kaplan on board, will “Nobody Wants This” take on a more “Girls”-esque tone? Will Bell’s dialogue evolve to include statements like “I believe I might be the podcaster of my generation, or at least a podcaster of a generation”? Instead of seeing this as adding “Girls” elements to the series, I would suggest that “Nobody Wants This” already contains some of those characteristics and that assigning Konner and Kaplan is simply acknowledging where the show naturally aligns.
The friends of Esther (Jackie Tohn) and Rebecca (Emily Arlook, Noah’s ex-girlfriend), are either similar to Marnie (characteristic of privilege and beauty) or Shoshanna (characterized by lovable neurosis), or a mix of both. Joanne and her sister Morgan (Justine Lupe), who co-host the podcast with her, are mostly like Jessas – free-spirited and pretty blondes; however, Joanne also shares some traits with Hannah Horvath, being somewhat disorganized but in a less irritating manner.
Sasha, Simon’s sibling, is similar to the character Adam in the series “Nobody Wants This”. At first, he seems rather tall and peculiar, but once you get to know him, he becomes your unassuming favorite on the show. Regarding Noah, there isn’t a clear equivalent character from “Girls” at the moment, but I have a feeling that somewhere in his past, there exists a video of him singing “What I Am”, which might resurface during season two. Dear writers of “Nobody Wants This”, we hope you’ll make this prediction come true!
