‘Joker 2’ Actor Behind That Twist Ending Kept It a Secret for Two Years. He’s Now Speaking Out: Todd Phillips ‘Has Balls to Make Such a Bold Swing’

As a lifelong cinephile who has seen more movies than I can count on one hand, I must say that the ending of “Joker: Folie à Deux” has left me utterly divided. On one hand, I admire the audacity of director Todd Phillips for taking such a bold and unconventional approach to the Joker narrative. The twist with Connor Storrie’s character being the real Joker is certainly unexpected and intriguing, adding a layer of complexity to the story that was missing in the first film.

SPOILER ALERT: This story includes details about the ending of “Joker: Folie à Deux‘

In an interview with TMZ, Connor Storrie – the actor portraying the Arkham Asylum inmate who fatally stabs Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) in “Joker: Folie à Deux” – stated he wasn’t taken aback by the fan reaction, as the surprising ending suggests his character could be the true Joker and was motivated by Arthur. In the movie’s climax, Storrie’s character kills Arthur and carves a grin into his cheeks using the same knife. For two years, Storrie had kept this plot twist a secret.

Storrie expressed that the role he’s considering, potentially as the Joker, seemed to be clearly centered around Joaquin Phoenix’s character. He explained, “It’s not about setting my path or defining who I am. Instead, it feels more like a piece of Arthur’s story.” He further clarified, “The fact that it’s not primarily about me or my future, but rather a part of Arthur’s journey, was quite clear.

Storrie shared that he was simply thrilled to be on set and wasn’t giving much thought to the potential implications of the surprise finale on his character’s future as a Batman antagonist.

The actor expressed that he hadn’t given a thought to the implications or the potential outcome, stating, ‘I was simply astounded to find myself there, participating in something so momentous.’ The character of the Joker is renowned for having a massive fanbase, bordering on cult status. Despite this, I couldn’t fathom my involvement. The whole production was kept incredibly secretive. I was aware of only that small aspect of the movie, and nothing else. They were very discreet about it. For two years, I didn’t share a word about the project with anyone.

The surprising ending combined with its musical segments have made “Joker: Folie à Deux” one of the most debated and contentious blockbusters in Hollywood’s current era. Unfortunately, this movie has struggled financially as well, earning just $37 million during its initial domestic release.

Storrie commented to TMZ that the movie had already stirred controversy before its release, which he considers a positive sign. When it was revealed that the film would be a musical, many people initially reacted with skepticism, including Storrie himself. He admits to wondering what a musical version of such a gritty and raw film could possibly look like. Given the success of the original, it’s understandable that fans might question the decision to transform it into a musical. However, Storrie suggests that those involved were well aware of this potential backlash when making such a bold move. After all, such a significant change would inevitably give some viewers the chance to express reservations about the creative choices being made.

Storrie expressed his view that it’s better for things to be divisive than dull or sanitized, and he applauded Todd Phillips for having the courage to take such a daring approach, understanding full well that there are passionate fans of Joker who praised the initial film. I’m not surprised that people either support or oppose the events depicted in it.

“Joker: Folie à Deux” is now playing in theaters nationwide from Warner Bros.
