As a seasoned gamer with memories of Saturday mornings spent glued to my television screen, watching the mighty Voltron defend the galaxy, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at Henry Cavill joining the live-action adaptation of this iconic series. I remember the thrill of seeing those five lion robots combine into one colossal defender, ready to take on any threat that dared cross its path.
Although Henry Cavill’s time as Superman (Man of Steel) and Geralt of Rivia might have concluded, he’s ready for a new role – he’s joined the cast of the forthcoming live-action Voltron adaptation by Amazon MGM Studios.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Henry Cavill is the second actor from the Voltron series to be officially announced. Daniel Quinn-Toye, who previously gained recognition as an understudy for Tom Holland in a West End production of Romeo & Juliet in London, has also been cast in a prominent role.
Details concerning Cavill’s character haven’t been revealed, but if the movie sticks to the original storyline, he might be portraying Keith Kogane – the captain of a five-member space expedition dispatched by the Galaxy Alliance to planet Arus. Upon their arrival, the team stumbles upon ancient robot lions that they can combine to form Voltron. This powerful entity is crucial in thwarting King Zarkon and his Drule empire’s attempts to dominate Arus, as it’s the only force capable of withstanding Zarkon’s fearsome monstrous creatures and his universal conquest plans.
The initial season of the 1984 Voltron series was actually a modified and translated version of the 1981 anime show, Beast King GoLion. Interestingly, the second season that introduced Vehicle Voltron was based on an entirely different series called Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV. Due to the success of Voltron in America, fresh episodes were produced featuring Lion Force Voltron, and eventually, there was a special episode where both versions of Voltron came together.
Back in 2016, DreamWorks Animation released an updated animated series titled “Voltron: Legendary Defender,” which streamed for 78 episodes on Netflix. Whether the upcoming movie adaptation will incorporate elements from this particular TV show version remains uncertain.
According to current plans, Rawson Marshall Thurber will be directing the movie titled “Voltron,” which he co-authored with Ellen Shanman. As of now, there is no scheduled release date for this film.
