As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Metaphor: ReFantazio has certainly piqued my interest with its intricate job system known as Archetypes. The freedom to swap party members and the emphasis on team composition have taken me back to the days of Final Fantasy Tactics, a game that I hold dear to my heart.
In ReFantazio, the job system is called Archetypes, and it lets you easily change any member of your party into any Archetype, although there are certain conditions for advanced Archetypes. It’s advantageous to frequently switch Archetypes, especially when tackling specific side dungeons where certain Archetypes may be suggested due to enemy weaknesses, but you’re free to use whatever setup you prefer. The key to building your team is the synergy abilities that become accessible when specific Archetypes are in your party.
Mage with Seeker, Healer, or Mage
The Mage Archetype tree is incredibly powerful, especially early on, since it has access to fire, ice, and electric attacks, which allows you to target a variety of enemy weaknesses. However, the abilities the Mage and its advanced versions can use only targets a single enemy. If you want to use a version that can target all enemies at once, you will need to use the Synthesis version of these abilities, which only becomes available if you have another Mage, a Seeker, or a Healer present. Of those three options, the best to go with is the Healer since the Healer gets to use a light damage attack that targets all enemies if a Mage is present.
Knight with back row damage dealers
The Knight is a versatile character that works well in various team setups due to its strong defensive capabilities, making it an ideal tank. If your strategy involves using multiple back-line attackers such as the Mage, Gunner, Healer, or Summoner, the Knight can effectively draw enemy attention, safeguarding your more vulnerable party members from harm. Even when the Knight’s piercing damage isn’t effective against your current foes, a defensive focus can ensure your party survives encounters with tough enemies.
Summoner and Masked Dancer
In a remarkable synergy, the teamwork between ReFantazio, the Summoner, and the Masked Dancer is unparalleled in strength. The Masked Dancer obtains powers that momentarily leave enemies vulnerable to certain elements, while the Summoner boasts an extensive arsenal of elemental attacks within the game. This allows you to weaken all foes to a specific element, like ice, and swiftly launch a heavy-hitting, multi-target ice attack that causes massive damage and extends your turns. It’s crucial to have the appropriate Vessels and Masks to maximize this combination; always craft these items in Akademia when you have the necessary materials.
Gunner with Gunner, Faker, or Summoner
Among the three types of physical attacks, piercing damage is least frequently encountered, making the Gunner class ideal when facing dungeons abundant in monsters vulnerable to piercing attacks. If another Gunner, a Faker, or a Summoner is present, the ability Wild Barrage from Synthesis becomes useful as it repeatedly inflicts piercing damage on all enemies.
Berserker with Knight
As a gamer, I’ve got two fierce Strike damage skills at my disposal – Wanton Destruction and Battlecry Tackle – when there’s a Knight in the mix. These bad boys, particularly Wanton Destruction, pack quite a punch, dealing massive physical damage and temporarily weakening enemies to Strike. The best part? Once I’ve used it once, I can keep dishing out the pain every turn without losing any action points due to that weakness. It’s a lifesaver against those tough opponents with hefty health bars!
Trickster
The Trickster, the advanced version of the Faker, has access to an extreme physical Almighty attack that doesn’t consume MP. Almighty damage is a special kind of damage that enemies cannot have resistance to, but they also can’t be weak to. This makes it useful for enemies without weaknesses, and this special move also doesn’t use MP, making it great for conserving MP in a long dungeon. To use this synthesis ability you need to have two allies in with the correct Archetypes. The first ally needs to be a Knight, Healer, or Commander, with the second ally using Thief, Faker, or Merchant.
Brawler, Merchant, Healer
In the game Metaphor: ReFantazio, the trio of Brawler, Merchant, and Healer offers a unique advantage – you gain access to some potent Almighty strikes from the Merchant, alongside several lighter attacks. The Almighty moves from the Merchant come at a price, but this is offset by the fact they don’t deplete your MP, a trade-off that might appeal to you in later stages of the game. Moreover, the powerful light attacks are beneficial as they expand your choices for inflicting high damage with light attacks, which are otherwise scarce.
Whatever the information says
For the majority of main and side dungeons in Metaphor: ReFantazio, you can purchase information about the monsters in each dungeon from an informant. This information usually tells you what the enemies’ weaknesses are, but if you go to your requests list, it will also add a recommended Archetypes section to the description. These are always the best possible setups, especially since it usually only recommends a couple Archetypes and not a full party of four, but you will have access to most of the enemy weaknesses, making it a nice play to start if you aren’t sure what party setup to go with.
