As a seasoned gamer and consumer of various products, I’ve seen my fair share of brand rivalries, but this one between Mas+ by Messi and Prime Hydration is quite intriguing. It seems that the similarities between their bottles have led to accusations of copying and even threats of lawsuits.
The distributor of drinks made by soccer star Lionel Messi, Mark Anthony International, has filed a lawsuit alleging that Prime Hydration is acting unfairly and suppressing competition in the sports drink market.
In June, soccer superstar Lionel Messi introduced his new beverage enterprise, Mas+ by Messi. The line currently offers four distinct tastes and can be purchased in either bottles or cans.
Fans of both Logan Paul and KSI quickly picked up on the resemblance between Mas+ and Prime Hydration, accusing the brand of being a “copy” or “knock-off” of the popular sports drink.
On October 8, 2024, the distributor of Mas+, a product associated with soccer star Lionel Messi, named Mark Anthony International, took legal action against Prime Hydration. The purpose of this lawsuit was to obtain a court declaration verifying that Mas+’s bottle design is not a copy of Prime Hydration’s design.
In the court case, Mark Anthony argues that Prime contacted beverage distributors soon after the product’s launch, asking them to halt sales of Mas+ by Messi until they modify the packaging. The distributor asserts that Prime has warned them about potential lawsuits over trademark and product design (trade dress) violations.
The legal case asserts that Prime isn’t just aiming to suppress fair competition, but it’s also attempting to dominate essential packaging aspects commonly used in the hydration drinks market.
The text continues to detail how Mark Anthony sought the advice of a seasoned market research specialist, aiming to determine whether consumers might mistake Prime and Mas+ endorsements from Messi.
The survey found absolutely no risk of confusing the two products, reinforcing Mark Anthony’s argument that confusion is unlikely.
As a passionate gamer, I’m sharing my thoughts on Mark Anthony’s complaint about sports drink bottles. He points out that brands like Prime stand out thanks to high-profile endorsements from gaming icons such as Logan Paul, KSI, and Messi. However, he also emphasizes that Logan’s involvement in multiple publicized scandals since his rise as a YouTube influencer has actually added fuel to the brand’s popularity.
It lists examples of his “scandals”, like “publishing a vlog making light of Japan’s Aokigahara” and “failing to release” his crypto video game – CryptoZoo.
Due to these controversies and extravagant public actions, people now recognize who Logan Paul is, and they can effortlessly tell him and his associates apart from Mr. Messi, as outlined in the lawsuit.
This lawsuit comes just days after Logan revealed the end of one of the most viral Prime Hydration claims since launch. On October 2, he revealed that the Prime Hydration “forever chemicals” lawsuit was dismissed by the judge over a year after it was filed.
