Colin Campbell‘s life.
David S. Ward, the award-winning screenwriter known for “The Sting” and “Sleepless in Seattle,” will direct “Dr. Campbell,” a biographical drama centered on the life of Dr. T. Colin Campbell, a trailblazer in plant-based nutrition.
The project marks Ward’s return to the director’s chair after the 1996 film “Down Periscope.”
The movie follows Campbell’s life story, starting from his childhood on a dairy farm during the 1930s, all the way to his groundbreaking research that linked diet to chronic illnesses. It delves into the obstacles he encountered, as he was met with resistance from political, academic, and corporate powers, since his findings contradicted the established food industry’s interests. Furthermore, it highlights how Campbell kick-started a movement with his influential book, “The China Study.
The plot summary for the movie goes like this: “Dr. Colin T. Campbell, initially in an unexpected position, subsequently confronts his own affliction while uncovering evidence that a diet rich in animal products significantly boosts the chances of illness. This revelation poses a threat to entities such as governments, corporations, and academic institutions, who prioritize power and wealth over honesty and wellbeing.
The upcoming production titled “Dr. Campbell” is a joint effort by Silent D Pictures and PlantPure Productions. The producers of this project are Nelson Campbell, John Corry, Djonny Chen, and Ajo Kacmar. Notably, Nelson Campbell, who is also the son of the subject and an executive producer on the film, has previously worked on documentaries focusing on plant-based nutrition. Meanwhile, John Corry, recognized for his work in “Forks Over Knives,” adds his expertise in health-related productions to the team.
Previously, Silent D Pictures has created the uplifting drama “High Wire” and the darkly comedic series “Influenced!”, featuring actress Evanna Lynch who is known for her role in the “Harry Potter” films.
Acclaimed for his work in comedies and sports movies such as “King Ralph” and “Major League”, Ward expressed in a statement: “What drew me just as much as the significance of Doctor Campbell’s findings was the person behind them. A quirky optimist with an ever-present wit and indomitable spirit, he defies all traditional notions of what constitutes a remarkable researcher. Truly, there is no one quite like him.
The project’s launch is scheduled for mid-2025, aiming for a release in 2026. Philippe Ashfield of Instant Entertainment is responsible for managing the public relations aspects.
