Starfield Dev Expresses Disappointment at Mostly Negative Player Reviews for Shattered Space DLC. „That Makes Me Sad, Honestly”

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent navigating the vast virtual landscapes of Bethesda games, I must admit that the recent release of Starfield: Shattered Space left me feeling rather underwhelmed. The mixed reception it has received among the gaming community is a far cry from the excitement and anticipation that preceded its launch.

The initial release of Starfield: Shattered Space last week garnered more negative responses than expected, with only 30% positive reviews on Steam, classifying it as a largely unfavorable response. This is in stark contrast to the base game, which despite not being a favorite among players (with 59% positive reviews), has received somewhat better reception. Bethesda’s Emil Pagliarulo has since commented on this issue.

  1. Pagliarulo, one of the game’s directors, admitted that he and the entire team are saddened by the cold reception Shattered Space.
  2. At the same time, he assured that the studio is not deaf to criticism from players. Some accused Pagliarulo after his last interview of ignoring the issues raised by the community.
  3. Bethesda has spent this year preparing, among other things, patches for Starfield and has no intention of abandoning this title. However, as Pagliarulo explains, it’s a huge game, so improving it takes a lot of time. Many elements are interconnected, so the devs must be careful not to spoil the rest by changing one of them.

Simultaneously, Pagliarulo highlighted that if you enjoyed the original Starfield, it’s worth checking out Shattered Space. If you liked the basic version, chances are you’ll appreciate the expansion too. In his words, “If Starfield appeals to you, give Shattered Space a try; you might find the add-on just as appealing.

If someone hasn’t experienced “Shattered Space” but enjoys “Starfield”, I strongly recommend giving this expansion a try as they might be missing out on something great. Conversely, if an individual has played “Shattered Space” and didn’t appreciate the DLC, I can empathize with their feelings.

As Bethesda gradually addresses the technical issues with Starfield, it’s crucial to acknowledge that the game’s overall structure, featuring numerous empty worlds and repetitive locations, is a significant concern. Unfortunately, substantially modifying this virtual universe would require nearly rebuilding it from the ground up, which is highly unlikely due to the substantial costs involved. Consequently, a significant shift in the game’s reception seems improbable.

While it’s true that Starfield may not surpass the fame of Skyrim or Fallout 4, given the amount of time Bethesda invests in improving it, the game continues to maintain a steady player base on Steam (with daily records at around 10k) and Game Pass. Additionally, it boasts an active modding community. Therefore, despite its current status, Starfield is far from dying out quickly.
