Twitch responds as VTubers erupt over new attire policy: “We want to get this right”

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen platforms evolve and adapt to the changing digital landscape. However, the recent Twitch attire policy update for VTubers has left me scratching my head more than solving a complex puzzle.

VTubers found themselves perplexed and irritated when Twitch clarified that its clothing policies extend to virtual streamers too, requiring them to ensure their digital avatars’ hips are appropriately concealed according to the guidelines.

On October 7th, members of the Vtubing community started noticing changes when the platform introduced its new Enforcement Notes feature. This additional tool serves as extra explanations and examples within their Community Guidelines, helping to anticipate and address any future rule violations more effectively.

Following this revelation, numerous VTubers openly criticized the policy, stating that they would need to create new characters as their current ones no longer comply with the platform’s updated requirements. This process can be quite costly and time-consuming for streamers.

Some even accused Twitch of “hating” them, with one lashing out after receiving a sexual content warning due to her avatar wearing a pajama onesie with some cleavage showing.

As a dedicated gamer, I reached out to Twitch for some clarity regarding their dress code, following the recent wave of criticism. They shared that their aim is to make their guidelines “as straightforward as possible” to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all streamers.

Twitch has made it clear that virtual YouTuber costumes should always cover the hips. Many vtubers, including myself, may not comply with this rule yet. It’s important to note that creating new outfits to adhere to evolving guidelines can be financially demanding and time-consuming. Take heed of this updated policy!

Twitch explained that by introducing the Enforcement Notes feature, their intention is to provide clarity about their boundaries for enforcement, eliminating any uncertainty for our community.

They explained that while they’ve provided additional instances of actions that break their guidelines, the guidelines themselves have not been altered in any way. Their goal is to make these rules clearer and reduce the chances of users accidentally violating them.

Twitch clarified that their dress code applies to both human broadcasters and virtual YouTubers (VTubers), but they haven’t explicitly stated whether it includes swimwear or settings like swimming pools, beaches, and similar environments.

Indeed, Twitch’s Community Guidelines specify that swimwear, brief shorts, and bodysuits can be worn, provided they fully conceal private areas. Consequently, VTubers might find it acceptable to broadcast while showing their hips in this kind of attire.

Primarily, Twitch underlined the significance of the VTubing community within their platform and expressed openness to receiving input concerning Enforcement Notes.

They expressed their desire for accuracy and gratitude for all feedback, noting that VTubers are an essential and enduring asset within the Twitch community.
