BBC Revisits ‘Pride and Prejudice’ With Mary Spinoff Titled ‘The Other Bennet Sister’

As a long-time admirer of Jane Austen’s works, having spent countless hours immersed in the intricate world of Regency England and its fascinating characters, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the news of “The Other Bennet Sister”. Growing up, I was always enamored by Lizzy Bennet, her wit, and her unyielding spirit. But as a quiet, introverted soul myself, I must admit that Mary Bennet has always held a special place in my heart.

Delighted news for Jane Austen enthusiasts: the BBC is reviving the “Pride and Prejudice” world by introducing a fresh spin-off series that focuses on Elizabeth Bennet’s sister!

Entitled “The Other Bennet Sister,” this upcoming series delves into the life of Mary Bennet, the understated and frequently overshadowed middle sister to Elizabeth (Lizzy). The story is based on Janice Hadlow’s novel with the same name.

The production company Bad Wolf, known for “Doctor Who,” is preparing a 10-episode series penned by Sarah Quintrell (“The Power”).

Mary, unlike her sisters, doesn’t fit the mold of a typical period drama protagonist. She’s clumsy, anxious, prone to preaching, and not exactly melodious. Neglected by her mother and apparently doomed to an unoccupied dance card forever, that is until Mary decides to take charge of her own destiny.

In “The Other Bennet Sister,” Mary embarks on a heartfelt journey of love, escaping the confines of her family’s home in Meryton to explore the grandeur of Regency London and the picturesque landscapes of the Lake District. Her adventure is driven by her quest for freedom, affection, and validation.

Casting has yet to be announced.

Quintrell expressed his excitement about narrating Mary’s tale, a Bennet sister less conventionally celebrated, delving into the experience of growing up as an outsider. It’s a pleasure to collaborate with Janice Hadlow and Bad Wolf on reinterpreting her exceptional perspective on this cherished classic. Finding our place at the BBC feels like a dream come true, especially given my childhood memories of their captivating Austen adaptations. I eagerly anticipate sharing this heartwarming narrative on screen, particularly for those who resonate with Mary’s story.

The 1995 BBC version of Jane Austen’s novel “Pride and Prejudice,” featuring Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet and Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy, became an immediate sensation, not just in the U.K., but worldwide. Another film adaptation in 2005, directed by Joe Wright with Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen playing the main characters, was also a success.

Kate Crowther, Becca Kinder, Jane Tranter, Rebecca Ferguson (for BBC), Sarah Quintrell, and Janice Hadlow serve as executive producers for “The Other Bennet Sister,” produced by Bad Wolf. Dan McCulloch, the director of content at Bad Wolf, developed and supervises the series. Global distribution rights are handled by Sony Pictures Television.

Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, commissioned the show for BBC iPlayer and BBC One.
