Mr. Chalamet Man, Play a Song For Us

As a seasoned movie critic with a particular fondness for biopics and musical dramas, I must say that Timothée Chalamet‘s transformation into Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown” is nothing short of captivating. Having watched the evolution of Chalamet’s career since his breakthrough role in “Call Me By Your Name,” it’s fascinating to see him take on such an iconic figure, especially one as complex and enigmatic as Dylan.

Actor Timothée Chalamet is transitioning from Barbie to Bob Dylan. He’s set to play Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s movie titled “A Complete Unknown“, releasing on December 25th. After rigorous preparation, which reportedly involved listening to a 12-hour long playlist of unheard Dylan songs, you can now witness the fruits of Chalamet’s labor. The film focuses on the pivotal Newport Music Festival where Dylan made his famous electric debut. This event has been portrayed previously in Todd Haynes’s movie “I’m Not There” and perhaps to some extent in “Factory Girl“. Nevertheless, let’s allow Timmy Chalamet to serenade you a bit…

Ladies and gentlemen, the trailer.

In the latest trailer for “A Complete Unknown,” Timothée Chalamet embraces the rock-star lifestyle and convincingly mimics Bob Dylan’s voice. He performs covers of “Girl From the North Country” and “Like a Rolling Stone.” The movie portrays Dylan’s emotionally turbulent journey as he leaves Minnesota for New York in search of inspiration, where he becomes embroiled in a love triangle while figuring out the kind of music he wants to create. Some try to dampen his electric performances, but he insists on turning it up loud. Catch the Bob Dylan vibe in the full video above.

What do we know so far?

The filming was completed by early July, as photographs reveal Timothée Chalamet on location, standing beside a car while wearing sunglasses, and seen leisurely reading on a park bench.

Previously at Cannes Film Festival last May during the promotion of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” Mangold revealed details about an upcoming project, mentioning that Benedict Cumberbatch would portray folk legend Pete Seeger. It’s worth noting that Seeger was a key figure in Bob Dylan’s fanbase, offering support to the singer before he became famous and inviting him to Newport for the first time. However, due to scheduling issues, it appears that Edward Norton took over the role, as evidenced by photographs showing him playing the banjo.

Who else is in the cast?

I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be part of the ensemble for “Top Gun: Maverick,” where Monica Barbaro takes on the role of Joan Baez and Elle Fanning portrays Sylvie Russo, a fictionalized Dylan paramour of the early ’60s. As for Johnny Cash, Boyd Holbrook will bring him to life, as confirmed in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. Furthermore, we’ve got an impressive lineup joining us, including Scoot McNairy, Dan Fogler, Will Harrison, Charlie Tahan, P.J. Byrne, Eli Brown, Nick Pupo, Big Bill Morganfield, Laura Kariuki, Eric Berryman, David Alan Basche, Joe Tippett, and James Austin Johnson. Unfortunately, it seems Austin Butler is still not joining the cast.

Is Timmy really singing live?

Absolutely! In an interview with Rolling Stone, Mangold confirmed that Chalamet and Barbaro performed live as Dylan and Baez. However, he noted that if one of the actors missed a note, there was no other take or option to replace it. Mangold expressed his commitment to capturing the performance, stating, “If Timmy has the courage to stand out there and expose himself, I should have the courage to stand behind the camera and film.” Additionally, several COVID-related setbacks provided Chalamet and Barbaro ample time to refine their musical skills. Mangold added that Chalamet was enthusiastic about the project, saying, “Timmy was a partner in this.

What’s the release date?
