I’ve always had a soft spot for puzzles ever since my childhood days huddled with Mama over our local paper’s crossword puzzle. But little did I know that this love affair would only intensify as I grew older and encountered more intriguing challenges like Wordle, Connections, Sudoku, and the rest.
In my school days, I’d join hands with my mom to solve the crossword puzzles from our town’s newspaper. The delightful bonding experience, where our thoughts melded, was something truly incomparable.
In the late ’80s, I and actor Ray Dooley worked together in a play at Yale Repertory Theatre. Frequently, we traveled to and fro between New York City and New Haven by train as part of our commute. Ray kindly shared his method for solving the daily crossword puzzle from The New York Times with me. It was especially delightful back then because we used the actual newspaper, folded into its distinctive quadrant shape. The thrill came from using a pencil or pen (if one felt confident) to write on the newsprint paper stock, which produced a pleasant and soothing sensation, even though we weren’t familiar with the term ASMR at that time.
My affection for puzzles has blossomed significantly since the arrival of games like Wordle, Connections, Spangram, Sudoku, and so forth. I may not possess any extraordinary intellect for them, but they offer a unique blend of relaxation and mental stimulation. You can tackle these challenges solo or with a companion, in various settings such as lounging in bed, squeezing into subway seats or waiting rooms. Puzzles have only positive connotations for me. By the way, I’m currently based in London and have been delighting in the BBC’s Ludwig, starring David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin – two of my favorite actors – who portray a woman and her puzzle-solving brother-in-law as they collaborate to find her husband by deciphering riddles and clues. It’s simply heavenly!
When asked to create a puzzle for A24’s new collection, 99 TV Crosswords, I contemplated using the martini, a favorite drink of Gerri from Succession, as my theme. I pondered if puzzle creators Kate Hawkins and Rachel Fabi could design a classic martini glass shape in the empty spaces. To my delight, they found my idea amusing and agreed, “Of course! That’s fantastic! We love it!” And with that, they began to work on it!
So, please, chill a glass and find a nice chaise to sprawl on and enjoy this excellent puzzle.
