Ali Abbasi, the director of the contentious movie portraying Donald Trump‘s life, “The Apprentice,” has decided to stay at the Trump International Hotel & Tower in New York City, where the film’s premiere is taking place.
The Iranian-Danish director expressed that this collaboration seems like a perfect match, given his association with Trump through a movie and his international identity, likening it to a divine union, he added with a chuckle. Moreover, he admitted to being intrigued and eager to explore the Trump opulence, but found it fell short of expectations.
Abbasi provides a brief walkthrough of the room, indicating a simple white table lamp. “It’s not exactly a Trump-style lamp,” he remarked. “It’s quite basic. The floor could use a good sweep. The outlets are a bit grubby. For an executive suite, it lacks the usual polish I’d expect from someone like Trump,” he added, being an architect by training.
Abbasi acknowledges that his hotel stay might appear as a marketing gimmick rather than anything substantial. “Whatever benefits the movie,” he stated, “is what I’m aiming for.” If required to construct a larger building, he’d certainly do so. However, he added with a touch of amusement, there’s an unusual delight in lounging beneath his own name and scribbling on a note bearing it.

The movie, featuring Sebastian Stan portraying a former president during his youthful years as a New York City real estate tycoon, opposite Maria Bakalova as his first wife Ivanka, made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Simultaneously, the Trump campaign warned of potential lawsuits against the film, with a representative denouncing it as “rubbish” and “fiction.
Trump’s legal team additionally delivered a stop-and-stay notice, cautioning the film production group against moving forward with any distribution agreements.
In “The Apprentice,” there are scenes portraying Trump taking amphetamines, undergoing liposuction, having a surgical procedure for his bald spot, and an incident where he aggressively pushes Ivanka to the ground, followed by an allegation of non-consensual sexual activity.
Abbasi has expressed that he’d be open to showing the film to Trump and discussing the project with him. In his words, “If I were in a fight with Sid Vicious, I wouldn’t talk to his lawyers. I’d throw a cake at him because it’s punk rock. I want to respond to punk rock with more punk rock, not take the boring route.
Abbasi said he has not extended an invitation to the premiere to Trump or his children.
The New York debut of the movie is scheduled for October 8th. Alongside Abbasi, Stan, and Bakalova, it’s anticipated that Jeremy Strong, portraying Trump mentor Roy Cohn, will attend the event as well.
“The Apprentice” is in theaters only on Oct. 11.
