Unreal Engine May Make It Easier To Bring Halo To PS5, Experts Say

As a seasoned gamer with decades of combat under my virtual belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia at the prospect of Halo gracing the PlayStation 5. The thought of battling it out on my trusty DualShock controller instead of the Xbox pad is almost too much to bear!

Towards the culmination of the Halo World Championships in 2024, 343 Industries revealed major updates regarding the future of Halo. The studio is set for a transformation into Halo Studios, with upcoming Halo games to be built using Unreal Engine 5 instead of Slipstream Engine. This transition has sparked renewed discussion about possible Halo releases on PlayStation 5. Experts in the gaming industry believe that this shift will facilitate the process of transferring Halo to different platforms.

Digital Foundry’s Rich Leadbetter, speaking through Eurogamer, stated that switching to Unreal Engine 5 might prove more convenient for developers compared to transferring the current Slipspace engine. This is because a versatile engine like Unreal Engine 5, designed for use on multiple platforms, generally requires less effort than older technology tailored specifically for Xbox and PC.

This year, it was previously mentioned in The Verge that Microsoft might be planning to make more games available on PlayStation 5, including the popular title Halo. Although Halo is predominantly associated with Xbox consoles, multi-platform releases have shown positive results for Microsoft in the past. For instance, Sea of Thieves discovered a new player base on PS5, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has been announced to come to the console after initially being exclusive to Xbox Series X|S for a few months.

Changing to Unreal Engine 5 might result in more games being brought over to PS5, but it’s unlikely that was the main motivation for the switch. Instead, the widespread use of Unreal Engine 5 in the gaming industry means there are more developers familiar with this engine compared to those who know the Slipstream Engine. This makes it easier for new hires at Halo Studios to get started on their projects without needing additional training.

Halo Studios hasn’t announced a release date for the upcoming Halo game yet, but the 25th anniversary of the first Halo game, Halo: Combat Evolved, is just two years off in 2026. Microsoft has hinted that they have plans to mark this significant milestone, which also coincides with the 25th anniversary of the original Xbox. At this point, we can only guess whether these celebrations will involve a brand new Halo game.
