Overwatch 2’s new Competitive feature gives players their “best” & “worst” matches ever

As a seasoned Overwatch 2 gamer with countless hours under my virtual belt, I must confess that the recent Competitive Drives feature has been quite the rollercoaster ride. On one hand, it’s been exhilarating to see the intensity and dedication from fellow players, making for some truly electrifying matches. The camaraderie, the strategy, the adrenaline – it’s all there, more palpable than ever.

The competitive mode in Overwatch 2, known as Competitive Drives, is receiving mixed reviews. Some players are raving about it because they’ve had some of their most thrilling games, whereas others argue that the game’s overall quality seems to have deteriorated further.

On October 4th, the competitive mode in Overwatch 2 was launched, providing unique bonuses to players as they advance in rank. This serves as an additional motivation for players to reach each milestone.

In order to advance to higher tiers by successfully completing matches, players are granted rewards. However, unlike some other competitions, losing could actually set you back. This means the stakes are higher and less experienced players might not realize this additional pressure to win.

Despite Competitive Drives concluding on October 7, it appears that the developers will have a substantial amount of feedback to sift through and potentially enhance for the next round, given the wide range of opinions expressed by players.

Initially, one competitor found their performance in the Drives dismal, yet they improved significantly as the weekend progressed.

Upon launching Drives, the game’s quality dropped more than anticipated, but I had faith it would improve by the weekend. However, I never thought it would improve so dramatically and quickly,” they expressed.

Over the last day or two, I’ve had some of the best gaming sessions in years, perhaps since 2019 when the role queue was introduced. Everyone seems incredibly dedicated. In fact, I’ve even encountered a few games where players asked their teammates at the start to really put effort into the game.

A different individual shared a similar thought: “Similar ordeal. The initial day was quite torturous. However, by the close of that day, I found myself playing more ranked matches than I had in months. And with every passing game, I could sense an improvement in their quality.

Over the weekend, I had an exceptional time playing solo queue in Overwatch 2. Matches were easy to join and the majority featured teams where everyone was communicating via microphones, putting in their best effort.

Why is it so bad lately?

On the other hand, not all individuals had a favorable encounter, particularly those who usually join quickplay games finding themselves in ranked matches instead, as these players tend to do so now and then.

I’m not criticizing 80% of the players, but I must admit that finding Competitive matches without Quickplay-style players is a struggle for me.

They’ve come up with a terrible concept for this new game setup lately. It’s just not fair, it’s completely unbalanced and playing it is a nightmare.

“The quality of the matches is poor, the banners are ugly, the event duration is insufficient, and the fear of missing out on the competition points is intense. Without a doubt, this is their least successful event to date.

The developers haven’t disclosed their plans yet for improving Competitive Drives in the long run, but we can anticipate getting more information through a Director’s Insight article at some stage. The Overwatch 2 team intends to keep refining the matchmaking process as part of their ongoing efforts.
