As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of League of Legends (LoL), I can confidently say that while these studies might label us as “intelligent,” they fail to capture the true essence of what makes this community so unique.
It appears that participants playing League of Legends, according to a study by Which Bingo, typically exhibit higher intelligence levels, with an average IQ score of 120.4 (as reported by Esports News UK).
As someone who’s just dived into the latest gaming survey (the Which Bingo one), I should make it clear that the participant pool wasn’t exactly massive – we’re talking over a thousand gamers here. So, while these findings are certainly interesting, let’s tread lightly and not jump to any solid conclusions based on them alone.
As a gamer, I recently participated in an intelligence assessment that was backed by psychologists. This test evaluated my skills in areas like math, verbal communication, logic, and visual thinking. Interestingly, players of games like League of Legends came just after me. The games I frequently play include Black Myth: Wukong, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Counter-Strike.
The players who ended up at the bottom were FIFA 23 and FC24 as well as Rocket League, with an average IQ of 89.8 and 90.8 respectively. In turn, when divided by platforms, PC users performed better (114.1 points), ahead of PlayStation owners (111), Xbox owners (105.9), and Switch (103.4) as well as mobile gamers (99.9). In terms of gender, the difference was slightly in favor of the ladies over the gentlemen.
Indeed, the validity of making such a comparison still needs to be established, regardless of the relatively small pool of respondents. After all, League of Legends (LoL) might be a dominant game, but it’s essential to consider whether its popularity rivals that of FIFA. Additionally, it can be debated that the barrier to entry for Riot Games’ MOBA may be higher compared to EA Sports’ football game, making it more appealing to less experienced or “casual” players.
Internet users tend to view these results skeptically, harboring doubts about the study, particularly when it comes to the self-proclaimed “genius” players’ personal experiences with League of Legends (LoL). This sentiment is often reflected in a well-known meme that humorously refers to playing LoL as a crime.
