As an avid gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the feat achieved by Michael “dogplayingtetris” Artiaga is nothing short of extraordinary. Having grown up playing Tetris on my Game Boy, I can only imagine the sheer determination and skill it took for him to complete the game not just once, but multiple times, reaching levels beyond what was previously thought possible.
In a groundbreaking achievement, Tetris was successfully completed for the very first time by an individual – or if you look at it another way, it marked the second time the game reached its end, considering the interpretation. Michael “dogplayingtetris” Artiaga has become the first person ever to attain the legendary “rebirth” within the classic puzzle game.
About a year ago, we shared an impressive achievement by Willis “Blue Scuti” Gibson, who was 13 at the time. He managed to advance to level 157 in Tetris, a point where the speed of falling blocks becomes so fast that the game automatically stops. Essentially, he completed the game under one of the numerous hypothetical scenarios available.
Rebirth and several records 346 levels later
In our previous discussion, we mentioned an additional “ending” that enthusiasts are familiar with. Much like other games from 8-bit platforms, the code for Tetris has a highest value of 255, or effectively 256 when you consider 0 as well. This programming solution plays a role in various aspects, such as the possibility that even precise attacks can miss their mark in the initial Pokemon generation, the maximum amount of Rupee in the first Legend of Zelda game, and so forth.
For games like Tetris, including Pac-Man, progressing as far as possible equates to achieving the highest number of levels. Notably, once you reach level 255, the game restarts from the beginning, which is often referred to informally as a “restart” or “reset,” but more colorfully, as a “rebirth.
In order to surpass the point where Blue Scuti finished, artiaga had to play a customized version of the game that could support levels beyond the standard limit of 157. Specifically, after a resurgence and achieving level 91 twice, artiaga effectively reached level 346.
Incidentally, the dog managed to establish a new high score: an impressive 29,486,164 points following 90 minutes of play. Previously, the highest score was 16,248,080 points. This achievement also earns the YouTuber the title for the greatest point increase compared to the previous record holder.
Is crash dodge the next goal?
This doesn’t imply that Tetris enthusiasts have conquered the final insurmountable obstacle. Youtuber Summoning Salt, however, notes that even the original version of the game theoretically allows you to avert the crash by employing a technique known as “crash dodge.” In practice, this involves dodging on nearly every level from 157 to 255 in order to prevent the game from shutting down forcefully.
Such a challenge almost certainly exceeds the capabilities of any human. Another thing is that the two previous “endings” also seemed to be beyond human reach. I’m sure there’s a player out there who’s crazy enough to at least try to get this Tetris trophy too.
