RPG Classic Planescape Torment Began as Three Different Games. Feargus Urquhart Reveals Details About One of Them

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I hear about the aborted sequels to Planescape: Torment. I remember the thrill of exploring the strange and exotic planes of existence, the intrigue of the Nameless One’s past, and the philosophical musings that made this game more than just a simple RPG.

Originally, multiple games within the Planescape: Torment series were being developed at once, but only a single game saw the light of day. Now, the original creator of Black Isle Studios, Feargus Urquhart, has provided more insight into one of these unfinished projects.

The conversation with Urquhart revealed that one project has seen little development, while details about the next one are scarce. But he was enthusiastic to discuss the third project, which aimed to be a first-person dungeon crawler utilizing 3D accelerated GPUs such as Voodoo from 3dfx.)

“I proposed we create a game that can be easily developed, without requiring any groundbreaking technology. To set us apart, we plan to utilize the Baldur’s Gate engine and develop a character that isn’t run-of-the-mill. We will make it stand out by bringing the camera in closer for a more intimate perspective.

Over time, many resources were devoted to the unreleased sequel to Stonekeep, which enabled new developers to prove themselves, having received a lot of creative freedom on the project. Interestingly, some of them didn’t even know the world of Planescape before starting work, as mentioned by the game’s lead artist, Tim Donley.

One day, Urquhart casually suggested, “How about we create a game based on ‘Planescape’?” And I, in my innocence, responded, “Excuse me, could you tell me what ‘Planescape’ is?

In time, a single project was completed and now stands among the most renowned titles in the RPG category. Perhaps we may look forward to the revival of the Planescape series, much like Baldur’s Gate 3 has returned.
