Josh Hutcherson Teases ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ as ‘Scarier’ Than Original, With ‘Different Animatronics Being Brought In’

As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with decades of movie-going under my belt, I must say that I am genuinely intrigued by the upcoming sequel to “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.” Having delved into the realm of horror movies countless times, I can attest to the fact that when done right, they can be a truly exhilarating experience.

Josh Hutcherson shares insights about the upcoming sequel to “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,” hinting that it will be more frightening than the original film.

Hutcherson explained to Esquire that it’s not just larger but the risks are significantly increased. More advanced animatronics are being incorporated, along with new types, creating an expansive universe.

He stated, “At present, we’re striking a balance between developing this universe intriguingly while ensuring our characters remain authentic. This is a crucial aspect we all emphasized in the initial film as the world of ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ is quite extraordinary and exaggerated. Finding the emotional depth of the characters will be key to its success.

Released in October 2023, ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s‘ was one of the most financially successful films of the year, earning approximately $300 million globally on a production budget of just $20 million. Remarkably, it premiered simultaneously on Peacock. The upcoming sequel, believed to continue the storyline from the second game in the ‘FNAF’ series, is scheduled for theater release on Dec 5, 2025.

Hutcherson believes that the fans will be thrilled by the sequel. It promises to be an enjoyable ride with its origins, and it will also be more frightening, as he mentioned.

In the directorial role of Emma Tammi once more, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” series presents a narrative where Mike (portrayed by Hutcherson) is a night-shift security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, an old and deserted arcade restaurant. As it turns out, Mike, who lost his younger brother in a kidnapping as a child, discovers that the friendly mascots of the pizzeria are actually lethal robots being manipulated by “ghost children.” In this chilling tale, Mike races against time to rescue his sister Abby before she falls victim to these menacing entities.

The video game series boasts an impressive collection of 21 games (10 main titles along with several spin-offs), providing ample content for potential sequels in film. When asked by Esquire about his involvement in future “FNAF” films following the second one, Hutcherson responded, “Who knows? I truly enjoy being part of this universe. Our director, Emma Tammi, is exceptional, and I believe my character, Mike, has endless possibilities. This could have a prolonged run and it could be quite entertaining, but for now we’re concentrating on the second film. We’ll see what happens next.

“Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” hails from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions.
