As a seasoned movie critic with decades of film appreciation under my belt, I must say the recent casting news for “Marty Supreme” is nothing short of electrifying! Fran Drescher, the iconic star of “The Nanny,” joining forces with Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler, The Creator, and a host of other talented actors in Josh Safdie’s table tennis movie is a truly intriguing blend of old and new Hollywood.
As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the illustrious Fran Drescher, known for her iconic role in “The Nanny” and serving as SAG-AFTRA president, has stepped onto the set of Josh Safdie’s upcoming table tennis film, “Marty Supreme.” In this exciting new venture, I’ll be bringing a character to life who serves as the mother of Timothée Chalamet’s on-screen persona. It’s a role I can hardly wait to delve into!
Joining Chalamet and Drescher on the screen are Gwyneth Paltrow, who returns to acting for the first time since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” as well as Tyler, the Creator, making his cinematic debut. Odessa A’zion also joins the cast, alongside magician Penn Jillette, popular investor Kevin O’Leary (also known as Mr. Wonderful), and filmmaker Abel Ferrara, best known for “Bad Lieutenant.
“Marty Supreme” Stars Timothée Chalamet as a Rising Ping Pong Champion. The movie, described as a “fictional exploration set in the 1950s ping pong scene,” is being produced and promoted by the studio. The project was first revealed by EbMaster in July, during its production phase.
Drescher gained significant recognition for her role in the CBS sitcom “The Nanny,” airing from 1993 to 1999, which earned her two Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe mentions. Her acting portfolio also encompasses films such as “The Beautician and the Beast,” “UHF,” “This Is Spinal Tap” and the animated “Hotel Transylvania” series.
In 2021, Drescher was chosen as the president of SAG-AFTRA, and in 2023, she guided the union through a five-month actors’ strike that affected the entertainment industry significantly. This strike eventually resulted in performers receiving a higher minimum wage, new royalty payments for streaming services, and safeguards against artificial intelligence.
Marty Supreme” marks Drescher’s return to films following the strike, with plans for her appearance in the upcoming “Spinal Tap” sequel as well.
Last week, images of Timothée Chalamet on the “Marty Supreme” set surfaced online, showing him donning 1950s style clothing – complete with round wire-rimmed glasses and a large white shirt beneath a blue sweater vest – as excitement for the movie continues to mount.
For the first time since 2008, Safdie has taken on a sole directing role for “Marty Supreme.” Alongside Ronald Bronstein, he penned the initial script, while also producing with Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Timothée Chalamet, and A24.
Josh Safdie primarily gained recognition through his collaborative works “Uncut Gems” and “Good Time” with his brother, Benny Safdie. Following their creative separation, Josh took charge as director for Adam Sandler’s recent Netflix comedy special entitled “Love You.” Moreover, he is currently teaming up with Sandler once more on a film project that revolves around the realm of sports memorabilia and baseball.
Drescher is represented by Reliant Talent and Authentic Management.
