„We Aren’t Going to Be Dumbasses”. It's the End of That '90s Show. Netflix Has Canceled the Sequel to the Popular Sitcom, but There Is Still Hope for the TV Series

As a dedicated fan of both ‘That ’70s Show’ and its sequel, ‘That ’90s Show‘, I must admit I was disappointed when I heard the news about its cancellation on Netflix. The show had a special place in my heart, and it felt like watching over my own family grow up through the screen.

In the past, That ’70s Show was extremely popular, leading to a decision years later to revisit this sitcom and create a sequel titled That ’90s Show. This new series centered around the kids of the original characters, experiencing their own youthful escapades while under the watchful eyes of Red and Kitty Forman.

In a subsequent development, the follow-up was divided into three segments, equivalent to two seasons. However, it seems that the series might conclude as Netflix has decided not to renew That ’90s Show, thus cancelling the sitcom. This information was announced on Instagram by Kurtwood Smith, who portrays Red.

It seems you’ve been eagerly awaiting season 3, but I regret to inform you that it won’t be happening. Netflix has chosen not to renew the show. I simply wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude to each and every one of you who have shown support and watched our series. Whether it was in far-off places during my travels or through social media, your kindness has touched me deeply. Bringing Grandpa Red to life for you all has been an incredible journey that I’ve cherished every step of the way.

I’ve mentioned it before, but it’s worth repeating… This series was filled with genuine emotion and boasted an exceptional team of actors, writers, directors, producers, and crew that any actor would be thrilled to collaborate with. Thank you for allowing Red, Kitty, their grandkid, all their friends, neighbors, the original cast members from “That 70’s Show,” and our fantastic guest stars to entertain you throughout two seasons. As Red Forman would say, we won’t act foolishly… We will market the show because diligent grandparents would strive to help these students graduate from high school.

Kurtwood Smith, as he delivered the disappointing update, simultaneously sparked optimism among fans. He revealed that the cast and crew are determined not to give up, and it seems they’re exploring options to transfer the sitcom to a different broadcaster. Nevertheless, the outcome is uncertain, and it remains to be decided if anyone will step in to continue the production.

For now, fans must accept that ‘That ’90s Show’ won’t be returning to Netflix, as it concluded with season 2. Though the second season briefly appeared in Netflix’s top 10 list, its viewership was not substantial. As time went by, the show’s audience seemed to dwindle, likely influencing Netflix’s choice to discontinue the sitcom since it wasn’t drawing in viewers. The final eight episodes are estimated to have garnered less than 1.9 million views during their premiere weekend, 1.6 million views on the first full weekend, and 1.4 million views on the second.
