Ryan Murphy Predicts Menendez Brothers Will Be ‘Out of Prison by Christmas’

As a devoted fan of Ryan Murphy‘s masterful storytelling, I eagerly follow his every move in the fascinating world of television. The recent development in the Menendez brothers’ case has reignited my interest in their story, and I wholeheartedly support Murphy’s potential return to this gripping tale.

Ryan Murphy is not currently working on a second season for “Monsters” on Netflix, which is based on the Lyle and Erik Menendez story, but he may not have finished exploring this narrative entirely.

Given the recent announcement of a court date for the Menendez brothers, Erik and Lyle, due to LA District Attorney George Gascón examining potential new evidence suggesting they were abused by their father, there’s a possibility that the showrunners might prolong the series.

Murphy suggested the possibility of a couple more episodes continuing the story, assuming Nicholas [Alexander Chavez] and Cooper [Koch] are on board with the idea,” I learned during our conversation on Thursday afternoon.

In the series, Chavez plays Lyle while Koch portrays Erik, as they depict the story of these two brothers who were sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the cold-blooded murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, which occurred in 1989.

The upcoming hearing might potentially result in a re-trial or re-sentencing for Erik and Lyle, however, it’s important to note that no final decisions have been reached as of now, according to Gascón.

Following Gascón’s announcement about reviewing fresh evidence, Kim Kardashian penned a piece urging the release of Erik and Lyle from prison. In September, Kardashian and Koch paid a visit to the brothers in their San Diego prison.

Murphy, the co-creator of “Monsters” alongside Ian Brennan, shared the series with Kardashian roughly a month before its Netflix debut. As Murphy explained, Kardashian was well-versed in the case’s details and had grown up with it. However, she wasn’t aware of much of the sexual abuse aspect. This piqued her interest, and she expressed a desire to help those involved. The renewed interest in the case, Murphy noted, underscores the influence of television. It can cast light on hidden issues and illuminate dark corners, using its power to bring attention to important matters.

When I first spoke to Murphy about “Monsters” last week, he said he wasn’t looking to become an advocate for the brothers. “I believe in justice, but I don’t believe in being a part of that machine,” Murphy said at the time. “That’s not my job. My job as an artist was to tell a perspective in a particular story. I feel I’ve done that, but I wish them well.”

Today, he has unexpectedly taken up the role of an advocate, primarily due to the widespread acclaim of the show and its potential impact on Gascón’s decision. In his own words, “We provided them with a chance in the court of public opinion. Essentially, we offered them a stage.” Murphy is optimistic, stating, “I believe they could be out of prison by Christmas. I truly feel that way.

The series faced its fair share of detractors. Erik made a statement, relayed through his wife, criticizing Murphy, with several family members echoing similar sentiments. Murphy commented, “What’s somewhat disheartening is that the family was so vehemently against the show and spoke out so strongly against it. However, what they believed would harm them is actually aiding them.” He added, “That doesn’t sit well.

Murphy has shared that “Monsters” Season 3 will feature Charlie Hunnam portraying the 1950s serial killer Ed Gein. For Season 4, he’s contemplating modern stories. Murphy expressed that dealing with contemporary topics can be both thrilling and risky. Earlier, he mentioned his lack of interest in the Menendez brothers. Instead, what intrigued him was the aspect of sexual abuse. This has always been a subject he found captivating. It’s interesting to him that this theme seems to have struck a chord with people, and some believe these facts should have been allowed as evidence in the second trial.
