‘Rings of Power’ Season 2 Finale: The Balrog Is Back, Stranger’s Identity Revealed, Three Major Deaths and the ‘Aveng-Elves’ Team Up

As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has traversed the vast landscapes of Middle-earth many times over, I must say that the Season 2 finale of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” left me both stunned and eager for more. The intricate web of betrayal, sacrifice, and revelation was woven with such skill that it’s no wonder Tolkien’s world continues to captivate us.

⚠️ Caution: This write-up unveils significant plot points from the Season 2 finale of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

In the final episode of Season 2, the destructive orc attack on Eregion, from “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” came to a disastrous end. Now, all the elves have joined forces against their shared enemy – Sauron, portrayed by Charlie Vickers.

In a stunning act of treachery, Adar (Sam Hazeldine), the orc leader, was brutally slain by his own kind, and they swore allegiance to Sauron, their long-hidden dark master. With Adar’s orcs now under Sauron’s command, he has become Middle-earth’s most formidable adversary. He is a formidable foe for the elves, but fortunately, they receive assistance: King Durin IV (Owain Arthur) and his dwarves are on their way to help.

The story opens in Khazad-dûm, where King Durin III (played by Peter Mullan) has been swayed by the influence of his ring of power. He’s been obsessively mining for mithril, intending to craft more rings, disregarding the entreaties of his son. This relentless mining awakens a colossal creature known as the Balrog. Eventually, Prince Durin manages to reach his father and persuades him to remove the ring. Regrettably, it’s already too late. As the Balrog lashes out with its fiery whip, the king is seized, making the ultimate sacrifice to save his son. With this act, Prince Durin IV assumes the throne as the new ruler.

In a significant turn of events within the episode, Charles Edwards portrays Celebrimbor, the skilled blacksmith and inventor of the rings, who unknowingly served as Sauron’s pawn. They engage in a profound dialogue where Sauron claims dominion over the rings, but Celebrimbor insists he is merely their captive. On his deathbed, Celebrimbor addresses him as “the Ringmaster,” which carries a more fitting tone!

‘Rings of Power’ Season 2 Finale: The Balrog Is Back, Stranger’s Identity Revealed, Three Major Deaths and the ‘Aveng-Elves’ Team Up

Following the care of Celebrimbor and Adar, Sauron shifts his focus to Galadriel (Morfydd Clark). In a surreal confrontation, Sauron manipulates his appearance, assuming forms of Celebrimbor, his former persona Halbrand, and even Galadriel herself. He gains the advantage when he wounds Galadriel with Morgoth’s cursed crown, Middle-earth’s initial dark ruler’s artifact. Escaping Sauron by leaping off a cliff into water, Galadriel is left with a spiritual injury that Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker) must address after the elves suffer defeat in the Battle of Eregion. With Sauron and his new orc forces triumphant, the elves establish a new refuge safeguarded by their rings. As all elves reunite, including Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova), the warrior-archer, they prepare to confront Sauron again.

The last scene marks the end of Season 2 for “The Rings of Power”. It’s a powerful display from the elves that leaves the season on an optimistic tone. In an interview with EbMaster, Córdova referred to them as “the Aveng-elves” while discussing the key events of the second-to-last episode, which was published on September 26.

Significantly, the final episode finally unmasks the Stranger (Daniel Weyman), a character whose identity fans have debated since long before the series premiere. As many had predicted, he is indeed Gandalf. In a pivotal scene with fellow magician Tom Bombadil (Rory Kinnear), the powerful sorcerer recovers his lost memories and retrieves his enchanted staff.

Amazon’s Prime Video has not yet officially confirmed a third season for “The Rings of Power,” but actor Morfydd Clark (who plays Arondir) hinted that it might be on its way soon. She hasn’t had a chance to read the scripts yet, but she did share with EbMaster where she hopes Arondir’s story will lead next.

During this season, Arondir has been less active compared to the first, but he’s clearly demonstrated his capabilities. I hope he gets a more strategic role moving forward, as I believe he’s ready to lead, make decisions, and have his insights considered. I’d love to see him become an integral part of the story, interacting with other characters. Currently, he seems a bit detached from the lore, but in the coming episodes, I expect him to join the established characters we know from the books. Having Arondir involved could add an interesting dynamic, potentially humanizing the higher-ups and showing how they connect with the people. I’m excited about this development and have some ideas, but I’m cautious about sharing them because I don’t want to inadvertently reveal spoilers and influence their plans.
