Kurt Sutter Exits Netflix Epic Western Series ‘The Abandons’ Just Before Production Wraps

As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the rollercoaster of Hollywood productions, I must admit that the news about Kurt Sutter departing “The Abandons” just weeks before its production wrap-up left me slightly bewildered.

According to our source, Kurt Sutter has recently decided to step away from the upcoming Netflix Western series “The Abandons,” only days before the production of the show was set to be completed. (Source: EbMaster)

Production for ‘The Abandoned’ began in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in May, and it is set to conclude in mid-October. Created by Sutter, the series also has him serving as executive producer and showrunner. The series was initially greenlit at Netflix back in October 2022, with news of its development first breaking in November 2021.

Netflix representatives refused to provide a statement, but it’s been reported that Sutter left the show due to creative disagreements following Netflix’s review of the initial episodes. Allegedly, the first episode was so lengthy that it needed to be divided into two parts, necessitating extra filming. Given that Netflix and the TV industry are focusing on reducing costs, the number of episodes for “The Abandons” had been reduced from 10 to 8, and the series had apparently already exceeded its budget to some extent.

Sutter didn’t give an immediate response to EbMaster’s request for a comment, but we’ll update this post if they get back to us.

The extensive lineup for this series features Lena Heady, Gillian Anderson, Nick Robinson, Diana Silvers, Lucas Till, Lamar Johnson, Aisling Franciosi, and Natalia del Riego.

The official series description states:

In the 1850s Oregon, a collection of unique, non-conformist families, striving for their Manifest Destiny, encounter a corrupt power seeking their land. These marginalized individuals, often shunned by society, band together to defend their homes. This struggle results in a violent conflict where the concept of ‘justice’ strays far from legal boundaries.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m well-acquainted with Kurt Sutter, famously recognized for crafting the gripping FX biker gang drama “Sons of Anarchy.” Rumors swirled in 2019 that my conduct on the set of the spinoff series “Mayans MC” led to my termination, due to concerns about my actions.

Deadline first reported Sutter’s exit from “The Abandons.”
