YouTube Shorts takes on TikTok with new 3 minute-long videos

As a longtime YouTube enthusiast and content creator, I must say I’m thrilled with this latest development! The extension of Shorts videos to three minutes is a game-changer for me and many others like me who often find ourselves struggling to condense our ideas into the previous 60-second limit.

YouTube has extended the length limit for its Shorts feature, allowing videos to run as long as three minutes, marking another challenge set against TikTok.

In July 2021, TikTok introduced a new video length of three minutes, which was swiftly embraced by both enthusiastic users and content creators on the platform.

Once more, YouTube is expanding the duration of its Shorts videos up to three minutes, mimicking the features of the TikTok-like app owned by Bytedance.

This change was announced on October 3, 2024, in a blog post from the Google-owned company.

Beginning October 15th, you’ll have the opportunity to share longer videos on Shorts! Now, you can post videos up to 3 minutes long. This is a highly demanded feature among creators, so we’re thrilled to provide you with more creative freedom to express your narratives.

“From now on, modifications concern only videos having a square or vertical format. Videos already uploaded prior to October 15th will remain unaffected. In the forthcoming months, we plan to enhance the recommendations for longer Shorts.

🎉 Exciting news from YouTube Shorts! 📝 Now, you can enjoy Longer Shorts that last up to 3 minutes! 🎨 Custom Templates are also available to help you stay trendy! 🕺 If you prefer fewer Shorts in your feed, just say so! 🫣 And, they’re now compatible with Dream Screen for an enhanced viewing experience! ✨ Plus, there’s even more to come! 🎉 Can’t wait to see the amazing content @YouTubeCreators and @tdd will create!

Users on social media, both viewers and content creators on YouTube, have been expressing their opinions swiftly regarding the extension in length, and it’s clear that a large number of them are enthusiastic about the change.

This is fantastic news! YouTube Shorts is now extending its video length limit from 60 seconds to a more accommodating 180 seconds. Since most of what I create falls within the 1-3 minute range, this update seems tailor-made for me,” expressed tech content creator DaPoets on TikTok.

Another said: “Nice! My shorts always go a little over a minute. Hard to cut down to 59 sec.”

It was noted by another user that for a TikTok video to be monetized, it must exceed one minute in length. As a result, when they shared the video on YouTube Shorts, they had to trim parts of it. However, since they no longer have this requirement, they won’t need to cut off any more footage from their videos while posting on YouTube Shorts.

In the past few weeks, YouTube has unveiled more updates following their previous announcement. Back in September, they introduced a new method of supporting favored content creators through gifts for vertical live streams, which is owned by Google.
