As a longtime cinema enthusiast who has witnessed the ebb and flow of Brazilian cinema over the years, I am beyond thrilled to see the resurgence of local content in our domestic cinemas. The recent government quotas for Brazilian films have not only opened doors for indie producers like myself but also given a much-needed boost to our industry’s struggling production sector.
There is currently a high demand for Brazilian films at domestic cinemas due to a combination of new federal government quotas for local productions and a shortage of U.S. blockbusters as a result of last year’s Hollywood strikes. The quotas, set by a presidential decree in 2024, require exhibitors with over 200 screens to reserve 16% of their screenings for Brazilian films, while smaller exhibitors only need to allocate 7.5%. Additionally, exhibitors can only show a single U.S. blockbuster in up to half of their sessions and must compensate by screening local productions above the quota if they choose to exceed this limit.
