As a seasoned gamer with over a decade of movie-watching under my belt, I must say the anticipation for Joker 2 has been a rollercoaster ride, much like the one you find at an amusement park. The initial hype was as thrilling as the first drop on a new ride, but alas, it seems the sequel is losing steam faster than a rollercoaster in need of maintenance.
Invite those who dared to feel enthusiastic about Joker 2, despite the concerning reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
Without forgetting, it’s worth noting that while 2019’s Joker initially received widespread acclaim, winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and becoming a strong contender for Oscars, as more people watched it, the film shifted from being universally hailed as a masterpiece to a highly divisive piece.
Joker’s sequel, Folie à Deux, debuted in Venice too, but its initial reception wasn’t as enthusiastic, with a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This is just a 2% difference from a Fresh rating, which is noteworthy because it means more than half (58%) of the reviews from critics were positive overall.
Yet, with the eagerly awaited sequel set to hit theaters this coming weekend (on October 4th), a recurring sentiment has surfaced from early viewings: it’s far from impressive.
The latest Joker sequel currently holds a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 47%, which has dipped by 11% in the last month. With more than 90 critic’s reviews analyzed, this rating is considered quite stable at present.
In the next chapter, we find ourselves directly following the events of the initial film, where Arthur is imprisoned in Arkham Asylum, anticipating his trial. There, he crosses paths with Lee, who embodies a rendition of Harley Quinn in this storyline, and from then on, a whirlwind of mayhem unfolds.
In our critique of the movie Joker 2, we described it as a “hard pill to digest,” suggesting that it may not leave a lasting impression. Although there are enjoyable moments, its unexpected musical component seems to do more harm than good, making this somewhat flawed concept worth skipping altogether.
Indeed, here’s something new for you – it turns out that Joker 2 is going to be a musical. This unique choice has certainly set it up for being a divisive sequel, but based on the initial responses I’ve seen on X/Twitter, it seems there might be more significant problems at hand.
“The first Joker movie might not be your cup of tea if you liked it, as the sequel is quite different. If you didn’t enjoy the initial film, then you may strongly dislike and even despise Joker 2, some users have warned. Others have described it as a shallow mess, suggesting that the story seems to deliberately alienate fans of the original Joker.
“The conclusion of the movie isn’t being discussed here, but it seems that its finale is stirring up debate. One viewer exclaimed, ‘I just learned about spoilers for Joker 2’s ending… I can’t believe it!’, and another tweeted, ‘Did we all watch the same ending to Joker 2 or am I having a dream?’
Joker 2 hits cinemas tomorrow, October 4. Find out if its age rating is suitable for kids, if Joker is connected to the Batman universe, and 10 movies like Joker you can watch before the sequel.
