As an ardent admirer of exceptional storytelling and groundbreaking talent, I am absolutely thrilled to learn about the impending adaptation of R.F. Kuang’s novel “Yellowface” into a scripted series. The sheer magnitude of recognition and acclaim that this book has garnered since its debut in 2023 speaks volumes about its potential to captivate audiences worldwide.

According to exclusive information obtained by EbMaster, Lionsgate Television intends to adapt R.F. Kuang’s novel “Yellowface” into a television series featuring scripts.

Karyn Kusama has been signed up to direct and take on an executive producer role in the prospective TV series. The production companies Captivate Entertainment, famous for the Jason Bourne movie series, and Tempo Wubato Productions led by Constance Wu and Justine Suzanne Jones are also involved in producing this show. Adam Docksey, who is the Vice President of Development at Captivate, will be overseeing the project on their behalf. As of now, there isn’t a writer assigned to the project.

“Following Athena Liu’s unexpected death in an accident, June Hayward seizes the sole manuscript of Athena’s newly completed work. She deceitfully presents this avant-garde novel about Chinese workers during World War I as her own under the new pen name ‘Juniper Song.’ However, as the repercussions of her fraud begin to mount, June finds herself teetering on the brink of exposure.

Originally published in May 2023, “Yellowface” quickly made its mark, debuting on the New York Times bestsellers list and maintaining its position for a remarkable seven weeks. It went on to win the 2023 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Fiction and was recognized as one of Time magazine’s 100 Must-Read Books of 2023, among numerous other awards. Apart from “Yellowface”, Kuang has also authored the “The Poppy War” trilogy and “Babel”.

She is repped by Independent Artist Group on behalf of Hannah Bowman at Liza Dawson Associates.

Kusama is widely recognized for her direction of movies such as “Destroyer,” “The Invitation,” “Jennifer’s Body,” and “Girlfight.” She has also overseen episodes of popular TV series, including Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” which earned her an Emmy nomination for exceptional directing in a drama series. Her television works also encompass “The L Word,” “Halt and Catch Fire,” “Billions,” “The Man in the High Castle,” and “Dead Ringers.

She is repped by WME, Black Bear, and Felker Toczek.

Wu and Jones established Tempo Wubato Productions, a company dedicated to creating and distributing films, television series, and live stage productions. Notably, Wu has appeared in movies such as “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Hustlers,” and has been a significant part of shows like “Fresh Off the Boat” and “The Terminal List.” The latter is currently gearing up for its second season.

Wu is repped by CAA, Principal Entertainment LA, and Hansen Jacobson.
