Sitges-Bound Horror Film ‘1978’ Picked Up by Black Mandala (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for international cinema and a soft spot for horror films that pack a punch, I am thoroughly intrigued by the upcoming release of “1978.” The fusion of soccer, horror, and political turmoil is an enticing recipe that promises to deliver a unique cinematic experience.

The New Zealand production company, Black Mandala Films, has acquired the distribution rights for the horror movie titled “1978,” which begins with a soccer game.

On Friday, the movie is set to make its global debut at the Sitges Fantasy and Horror Film Festival in Spain. Later, it’s scheduled for its American festival premiere at Screamfest on October 12th.

Under the guidance of directors Luciano and Nicolás Onetti (“Abrakadabra,” “What the Waters Left Behind”), who collaborated with Camilo Zaffora on the screenplay, the story unfolds during the World Cup final between Argentina and Holland, amidst a military dictatorship. A band of tormentors bursts into a household, abducting a group of young individuals and transferring them to a covert detention facility. Initially, this seems like a brutal interrogation; however, it soon transforms into a harrowing ordeal: the kidnapped group is not who they thought – they are part of a grisly cult influenced by an unseen supernatural entity. The secret prison will metamorphose into a living hell.

The movie boasts an illustrious ensemble featuring Agustín Pardella (nominated for an Oscar in “Society of the Snow”), Carlos Portaluppi (also nominated for an Oscar with “Argentina 1985” and “The Secret in Their Eyes”), Mario Alarcón (Oscar winner for “The Secret in Their Eyes”), Agustin Olcese (“What the Waters Left Behind”), Jorge Lorenzo (“El Marginal”), Santiago Ríos (“Tumberos”), Gustavo Bonfigli (“Wild Tales”), Paula Silva (“Virus 32”) and Gustavo Pardi (“El Marginal”).

The unfinished version of the film, which was previously screened at the Blood Window Showcase during the Cannes Market, is now being promoted with a trailer and poster. These promotional materials are for the upcoming debuts at Sitges and U.S. festivals. The sales for the title will begin at next year’s European Film Market in Berlin.
