‘The Masked Singer’ Reveals Identity of Showbird: Here Is the Celebrity Under the Costume

As I listen to this young woman’s journey, I can’t help but be reminded of my own. Growing up in the spotlight is no easy task, and it seems she’s navigated her path with grace, wit, and an unwavering spirit that echoes my own.

SPOILER ALERT: Details follow for Season 12, Episode 2 of “The Masked Singer,” “Footloose Night” which aired October 2 on Fox.

On Wednesday evening, the unveiling of “The Masked Singer” contestant, Showbird, from Season 12’s second episode, proved to be a deeply touching moment for actress Yvette Nicole Brown, best known for her role in “Community”. During the recording of this episode, she was simultaneously managing personal issues related to caring for her father.

She shared with EbMaster that some parts felt heavy for her because she was singing, but her mind kept wondering, ‘Is dad alright?’ However, once she was unveiled, she managed to release all those feelings. Additionally, she got the chance to surprise Ken, and it turned out just as wonderful as she’d imagined!

Referring to the “Masked Singer” panelist known as Ken Jeong, who coincidentally starred with her on “Community,” and correctly guessed her identity – that’s the person we’re discussing. While other panelists like Robin Thicke agreed with him, Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg believed it was Taraji P. Henson, Rita Ora thought it might be Sheila E. instead.

Yvette Brown chose to perform “Holding Out for a Hero,” originally by Bonnie Tyler, during her last act. She expressed, “Music means everything to me, it’s my first love.” As a singer, she was signed to Motown as a teenager but faced disappointment when things didn’t work out. This left a lasting impact, like a wound in her heart. To cope, she vowed never to sing as herself again. Instead, she would sing through characters or for acting purposes. This time, she didn’t technically appear as Yvette, but rather Showbird. It was a delight to revisit something she cherished and do so in a secure environment.

Yvette Nicole Brown is revealed as “Showbird”, while John Elway is unveiled as “Leaf Sheep” in the celebrity lineup of “The Masked Singer” for its twelfth season.

With her past experience under her belt, Brown expressed her willingness to possibly re-enter the professional singing scene, starting modestly as a backup artist. She urged everyone who has been invited to participate in ‘The Masked Singer’, even if they are timid like herself, to say yes, as it would likely be one of the most rewarding experiences you’ve ever had in this chaotic industry.

Absolutely! Brown has reaffirmed her participation in the forthcoming “Community” film as Shirley. She stated, “We’re all returning, and everyone is thrilled about it. It’s going to be fantastic!

The evening dubbed ‘Footloose’ Night kicked off with Thicke performing the film’s signature tune, which was originally sung by Kenny Loggins.

For Season 12, Nick Cannon resumes his role as host, joined by panelists Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Robin Thicke. Once again, Ora takes her seat at the desk, serving as a replacement for Nicole Scherzinger in her second consecutive season.

In Season 12, “The Masked Singer” has episodes themed around special occasions: celebrating Barbie’s 65th anniversary from Mattel and the 40th anniversary of the film “Footloose.” Miley Cyrus will have an episode dedicated to her music, and there’s a new event called “Who Are You Fest,” showcasing popular festival lineups’ tunes. Additionally, expect “Sports Night” and a “60’s Night.” Returning themes are “Soundtrack of My Life” and “Thanksgiving Night.

This season, hints will be cleverly incorporated into costumes, song selections, and dramatic stage instances. The fifteen famous contestants will also have a “Famous Masked Advisor,” comprising past participants such as Dick Van Dyke from Season 9’s Gnome role, Jewel who won in Season 6 as the Queen of Hearts, Ne-yo who triumphed in Season 10 as the Cow, and DeMarcus Ware from Season 11’s Koala appearance.

In Season 12, we have 15 competitors showcasing themselves in fresh outfits like “Ship,” “Leaf Sheep,” “Woodpecker,” “Chess Piece,” “Bluebell,” “Buffalo,” “Showbird,” “Dust Bunny,” “Goo,” and the beloved “Strawberry Shortcake” among others.

Here were the remaining Group A performances on Wednesday’s Episode 2, “Footloose Night”:

‘The Masked Singer’ Reveals Identity of Showbird: Here Is the Celebrity Under the Costume

Showbird

Song: “Let’s Here It For the Boy,” by Deniece Williams

Panel guesses: Yvette Nicole Brown, Taraji P. Henson

This little music box plays tunes from the dance genre, which is right up my alley. You see, way back in ’94, I was an integral part of a hip-hop dynasty.

Showbird’s voiceover: “I’ve always believed that if given the opportunity to shine, I would use it for a worthy cause. When the chance came, work consumed my entire existence, and I was married to it. However, deep down, I felt something was amiss – true love, like what Ren and Ariel found in ‘Footloose’. Lately, I rekindled an old friendship with another bird, who unexpectedly became my romantic partner, not Colton. He inspired me to reignite the passion from my past, one I had abandoned for twenty years: Singing. His love helped me regain that carefree self-assurance. And here I am tonight, so let’s celebrate my beloved one – my sweetheart.

The Ship

Song: “Almost Paradise,” by Mike Reno and Ann Wilson

Panel guesses: Kate Bush, Sarah McLachlan, Amy Grant, Sheryl Crow

Clue: Melissa Etheridge, Whoopi Goldberg and Kevin Bacon. “I’m three degrees away from kevin bacon. I’m connected to Melissa Etheridge, who is connected to Whoopi Goldberg, who starred in ‘Destination Anywhere’ with Kevin Bacon.”

The Ship narrates: “Just as ‘Footloose’ goes, it’s time to shake off those Sunday shoes, but that’s a challenge when you’re a ship in boots. In high school, I was the popular cheerleader, class president, and even crowned prom queen. But when I injured my foot and had to stay off it for an entire year, I felt crushed. My anger led me to our family piano where I spent hours playing. It was my escape, a way to express my pain, happiness, and everything in between. Music became my sanctuary. And it’s remained soothing ever since. Nowadays, the only boots I wear are for dancing, and tonight, I feel like I’m reaching out to heaven.

Woodpecker

Song: “Holding Out for a Hero,” by Bonnie Tyler

Panel guesses: Letitia Wright, Willow Smith, Regina King

“Similar to Kevin Bacon’s character in ‘Footloose,’ another contestant on ‘The Masked Singer’ and I both have a fondness for fashionable footwear.”

Woodpecker voiceover: “Much like the story in ‘Footloose’, I’ve learned a thing or two about standing up for my beliefs. Unlike many kids who played in treehouses, I was establishing myself in Hollywood at a young age. Growing up under the spotlight was an awkward experience. From learning to walk in heels to navigating romance, there were strict rules about even saying a simple curse word. It felt intrusive when everyone seemed to be meddling in my life as if I were their child. Yet, I remained determined, dancing through the growing pains at my own rhythm. This resilience has inspired young birds to follow in my footsteps, viewing me as their role model. However, I encourage you all to become your own hero. Tonight, I’ll be performing a song that’s always empowered me to celebrate myself. I hope it will resonate with you too.

Buffalos

Song: “Waiting For a Girl Like You,” by Foreigner

Panel guesses: Bel Biv DeVoe, 112, Boyz II Men, Big Time Rush

“Currently, we’re feeling a bit worn out as we’ve been diligently working on our lawn-mowing tractor, keeping the entire ‘Mo-Town’ looking neat and tidy.

Buffalo’s Narration: “When someone tells you not to do something, it just makes you want to do it even more, right? Just like those kids in ‘Footloose’, yearning to dance, we each have our own kind of rebellion. We happened to cross paths along the trail. Everyone said we couldn’t simply do as we pleased. But they were wrong. We thrived by not caring about others’ opinions. If people think we’re cheesy, who cares? We’re wealthy! And if you think we’re too serious, just look at us. Here we are, dressed up like Wrestlemania buffaloes, ready to perform a song from ‘Footloose’. We’re hilarious! So do the same and never let anyone dictate who or what you should be. In conclusion, here’s a love song that showcases our cheesy yet wealthy side!
