Will Smith’s Fart Allegedly Halted Production on Men in Black for 3 Hours

As a long-time fan and admirer of Barry Sonnenfeld, I must say that his latest anecdote about Will Smith’s infamous flatulence incident on the set of Men in Black is simply hilarious! The way he describes the event with such vivid detail and comedic flair is truly reminiscent of his directorial style.

Barry Sonnenfeld has now entered the stage where he freely shares numerous stories about his life as a celebrity, much like a bursting game machine at Dave & Busters after accumulating too many quarters/stories. Having climbed the ladder of success and knowing various secrets, he is now spilling them out. Currently, Sonnenfeld is promoting his second memoir, Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time, and one anecdote he couldn’t contain any longer has finally been shared.

On Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast, Sonnenfeld shared an amusing story about a rather significant incident involving Will Smith. It seems that during the filming of “Men in Black,” Smith let out a flatulent explosion so powerful that it brought production to a standstill for three hours. This eruption occurred while they were shooting the scene with the upside-down car, which required a sealed rig for Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. Sonnenfeld recounted, “We were preparing to film Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, and let me tell you, Tommy Lee Jones has no patience for foolishness.” Contrary to his reputation for intolerance, particularly towards Jim Carrey’s antics on “Batman Forever,” Tommy Lee Jones exhibited a great deal of understanding for Will Smith after the unfortunate incident. According to Sonnenfeld, Smith apologized profusely, saying, “Oh, Jesus, I’m so sorry, Tommy,” and Baz, the director, was called upon to fetch a ladder. Despite the awkwardness, Tommy Lee Jones responded graciously, reassuring Will, “That’s fine, Will. No worries, Will. Don’t worry, Will.

In simpler terms, Sonnenfeld discovered that Will Smith frequently and quite strongly passes gas. He explained this to Ripa, who didn’t wish to be part of the story, saying, “Will Smith has a problem with excessive flatulence. It’s not something you want to experience, especially if you’re in a small, air-tight space with Will Smith’s gas.” He added that even just sitting next to him at a ranch could be unpleasant. The whole area had to be cleared for three hours due to the strong smell. “Despite this, he’s a nice guy. Some people can’t control their gas, while others can,” Sonnenfeld said, seemingly forgetting that everyone passes gas.
