As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for behind-the-scenes narratives, I find Justin Wells’ journey fascinatingly compelling. A man who cut his teeth at local stations in Florida and New York, climbed the ranks at Fox News, and now stands on the precipice of a new media era, he embodies the spirit of resilience and adaptability that drives the industry forward.
As an executive producer at Fox News Channel, Justin Wells managed several contentious news segments and numerous documentaries tailored for their Fox Nation streaming platform. He’s now looking to share his skills with more neutral media organizations.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I, the same individual who contributed to the success of “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” have crafted a riveting six-part documentary series titled “Art of the Surge.” This extraordinary production offers an intimate look into the recent political journey of former President Donald Trump during his campaigning phase. One intriguing aspect that sets this series apart is my unique vantage point, which placed a camera mere feet away as Secret Service agents responded to an assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pa. The premiere of this enthralling series takes place this Wednesday across Carlson’s digital media platforms. I’m excited to report that the response has been overwhelming, attracting attention not just from the usual suspects, but a diverse range of interested parties as well.
In other words, he expresses his astonishment, stating, ‘This isn’t an ordinary conversation, it’s more like speaking with Chris Ruddy, the CEO of Newsmax.'” (Paraphrased)
He refused to mention particular parties he could be discussing business with. In “Surge,” there’s no narrative or spoken dialogue, only a camera that gives viewers a sneak peek into some of the places that have made news during Trump’s campaign, as if we were a fly on the wall observing him directly.
Wells has launched a new production company, Ashokan Studios (the name means “place of many fishes” or “where rushing waters meet”), and thinks he can find a market for high-quality programing that will appeal to conservatives. Executives at streaming services, he says, “are looking and realizing that there’s a huge swath of Americans” — not just Trump supporters — who “are being left behind.”
There are numerous platforms producing scripted shows and documentaries tailored for conservative audiences, he points out, but some of these lack the quality they deserve or simply don’t resonate. Here, I aim to address this issue by providing top-notch content.
Despite apparent differences, figures such as Wells, Don Lemon, and Brian Williams share a common thread: they’ve left established media organizations to venture independently. Their motivations vary; some are driven by ambition or a desire for creative freedom beyond traditional journalism. Others may have been unexpectedly let go. In 2023, both Wells and Carlson, who were long-time colleagues at Fox News, found themselves abruptly terminated. Despite the controversy surrounding his show – which faced significant criticism and advertiser boycotts due to some of its host’s views on race and gender – it was a cornerstone of the primetime schedule. “We appreciate his service to the network as a host and prior to that as a contributor,” the company stated in their announcement at the time.
According to Wells, he’s limited in discussing his time at Fox News due to exit contracts. However, he was informed he was terminated while on an Uber ride heading to Fox News’ New York office. Within hours, he flew to Florida to meet with Carlson, who resides there, and discuss his next steps.
As an ardent admirer, I embarked on an exciting journey alongside a partner, aiming to establish a fresh media enterprise centered around Carlson. In this venture, I was fortunate enough to have the support of Carlson for a year. According to my account, I played a role in fostering a connection with X and was instrumental in planning marketing strategies and programming, among other aspects. With Carlson’s backing, I embarked on launching my own company, which I proudly declare as entirely self-financed. Currently, I continue to collaborate with Carlson in an advisory capacity.
The phenomenon of ‘Surge’ persists, guiding the producer to intriguing locales. He along with his team have been present backstage at both debates for this year’s presidential elections. He intends to participate in the upcoming activities when Trump visits Butler this weekend for a commemorative event. Interestingly, Wells can be seen in one of the documentary episodes, offering viewers a glimpse into some of the food – including McDonald’s and Jimmy John’s – served on ‘Trump Force One’, the campaign aircraft.
Previously working at local Florida stations and New York’s WNYW before moving to Fox News, Wells infrequently appears on “Surge,” but expresses little desire to be a regular on-screen personality. He values experiencing the Trump campaign directly, without filter, over his role in this regard, stating so himself.
