More Game Adaptations of Movies, TV Series and Comic Books. Independent Developers Are to Take Care of Their High Quality

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen the highs and lows of licensed game adaptations. From the glory days of the Arkham series to the disappointing flops that make us cringe just thinking about them, it’s been quite a rollercoaster ride.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Devolver Digital has unveiled a fresh publishing label dubbed Big Fan Games! This exciting new venture is all about bringing popular movie, comic, and TV show adaptations to life through the talents of indie game developers. Can’t wait to see what they come up with!

Experience in adaptations

The publisher in question has been collaborating with notable partners like Disney, Dark Horse Comics, Rebellion, and Lionsgate, and it’s worth noting that their team boasts some background in handling licensed brands. Many members of Big Fan Games are actually employed by Good Shepherd, known for publishing games such as John Wick Hex and Hellboy: Web of Wyrd. Conversely, Devolver is the one who launched Reigns: Game of Thrones into the marketplace.

Just as you share our passion for games, we do too! However, when it comes to “official games,” we think there’s an opportunity for a fresh perspective where independent creators can call the shots. They can take risks and bring forth innovative concepts not bound by financial spreadsheets. That’s why we founded Big Fan, with the aim of turning this vision into reality.

It appears Big Fan has some exciting projects in store for us, with at least six being developed. Given that these are likely smaller productions and their publishing company aims to release around four to five games annually, we might not have to wait long for these new releases.

Enthusiasts are the best

It’s equally crucial for a company to link its development teams with brands they admire, which often leads to captivating game titles since exceptional creations usually stem from genuine enthusiasm.

In this optimal scenario, a programmer, with a fervent enthusiasm for a particular intellectual property (IP), is also an active member of its community. Conversely, the IP owner has a desire to create something, rather than the other way around.

To sum up, it’s important to point out that adaptations from movies or comics have been thriving lately. Previously, they were often viewed negatively as low quality productions intended for quick profits. However, thankfully, the current state is much improved, and series like Arkham, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Star Wars Jedi serve as proof of this positive change.
