Peacock Will Be Free With Charter’s Spectrum TV Select Under Multiyear NBCUniversal Deal Renewal

As a seasoned cinema devotee with decades of TV viewing under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement about the latest development in the world of streaming services. The partnership between Charter Communications and NBCUniversal to offer Peacock Premium at no additional cost to Spectrum TV Select video customers is a game-changer.

Charter Communications has inked another deal to stir streaming into the cable TV mix.

NBCUniversal and Charter have agreed on a fresh, multiyear contract. This arrangement means that Spectrum TV Select video subscribers will get access to the ad-supported version of Peacock Premium at no extra charge.

After Charter secured agreements for Disney+, ESPN+, Max from Warner Bros. Discovery, Discovery+, Paramount+’s from Paramount Global, AMC+’s from AMC Networks, and Vix from TelevisaUnivision, Spectrum TV is now adding Peacock to its lineup. This expansion is expected to give Spectrum TV Select video customers up to $65 per month in streaming value from these services, as per Charter’s statement.

It appears that Charter is required to pay a fee per subscriber to media companies for the privilege of offering their streaming services as part of Spectrum TV packages. This means that while some cable TV customers may not directly pay for these streaming services, it’s reasonable to expect that Charter might increase its monthly subscription fees to cover the cost of the expanded linear and streaming programming.

The specific monetary aspects of the NBCU-Charter deal remain undisclosed. However, under this agreement, Charter will maintain access to NBCU’s entire range of broadcast, entertainment, Hispanic, news, and sports networks. Furthermore, in the upcoming months, Peacock Premium is expected to be combined with Spectrum TV Select packages.

The charter additionally enables video subscribers to elevate to the advertisement-free Peacock Premium+ level. Furthermore, they plan to offer both Peacock versions for sale to their broadband-exclusive clients by the year 2025.

Matt Bond, NBCU’s content distribution chairman, announced that extending our partnership with Charter guarantees Spectrum video subscribers can still enjoy the top-tier media collection, either through conventional TV or streaming on Peacock. The main objective we aimed to accomplish was striking a deal that acknowledges the worth of our linear programming and the resources spent on creating premium content, thereby increasing the reach of Peacock to more consumers. We are thrilled to collaborate with Charter in attaining these goals for the advantage of our audience.

Beyond providing Peacock Premium free of charge to Spectrum video subscribers, the broadcasting contract guarantees that Charter will continue to transmit NBCUniversal’s owned stations like NBC, Telemundo, Bravo, CNBC, CNBC World, E!, MSNBC, Universo, Oxygen, SYFY, Telemundo Network, Universal Kids, USA Network, The Golf Channel, NBC Sports Regional Networks, and New England Cable News. Furthermore, the channels Bravo, CNBC, CNBC World, E!, MSNBC, Oxygen, SYFY, and Universal Kids will also be accessible through Spectrum TV Stream.

Through the resumption of our long-term collaboration with NBCUniversal, we’ve finalized agreements with all significant content providers,” explained Tom Montemagno, Charter’s Executive Vice President of Programming Acquisition. “This move offers us more adaptability and increased value to our clients by integrating DTC streaming apps into their Spectrum TV service at no additional charge.

By the end of last June, I was part of a crowd of 12.72 million residential video subscribers with Charter. However, over the following period, that number dwindled by 393,000, representing a decrease of 9.6% compared to the same timeframe the previous year. When you include business pay-TV customers, as of June 30th, the total video subscriber base was 13.3 million.
