Throne And Liberty Launches To Big Concurrent Player Numbers (But Not As Big As New World Or Lost Ark)

As a longtime fan of MMORPGs, I must admit that Throne and Liberty’s launch has been quite intriguing to me. Having spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds, I can’t help but be captivated by the sheer number of players Throne and Liberty attracted on its first day. The concurrent player count of 326,377 is nothing short of impressive!

The free-to-play MMORPG titled “Throne and Liberty,” developed by NCSOFT (Korean creator) and published by Amazon Games, has launched successfully on Steam, albeit not reaching the same scale as Amazon’s prior two MMOs.

During a pre-release phase where players could purchase early access for five extra days, Throne and Liberty simultaneously had approximately 56,000 active players at its peak. On October 1, when the game became accessible to all players without charge, the number of concurrent players skyrocketed. On its launch day, Throne of Liberty managed a staggering 326,377 simultaneous players, and for a while it ranked fourth among the most-played games on Steam.

With the debut of Throne and Liberty, much like many MMO launches, the first few hours were marred by server problems and long queues for login. To cope with this surge in demand, NCSOFT promptly set up additional servers. In addition to these initial hiccups, there were a few more complications that surfaced soon after launch. These included some players encountering difficulties in creating new characters or finding missing characters for those who participated during the early access period. However, NCSOFT has assured us they are addressing these issues.

The debut numbers for Throne and Liberty on Steam are impressive, yet they trail behind the launches of Amazon’s earlier MMOs, New World and Lost Ark. New World, a self-developed project by Amazon, shattered Steam records upon its 2021 release, boasting over 913,000 simultaneous players, an accomplishment noteworthy given its $40 price point. Lost Ark, another Korean MMO localized and distributed by Amazon, outperformed even New World during its 2022 launch, amassing a staggering 1.3 million concurrent players. It’s essential to mention that Throne and Liberty is also accessible on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, implying that its Steam player count doesn’t provide the complete picture.

Before launch, Amazon outlined all modifications they planned for Throne and Liberty compared to its Korean version, aiming to adapt the game’s business model to Western players’ preferences. The adjustments comprised a reduction in the cost of the battle pass and leveling pass, along with extra rewards and elimination of an optional subscription called Blessing of Solisium. Amazon stated they would assess necessary modifications to this subscription to cater to their players’ needs.

In addition to Throne and Liberty, Amazon had plans to publish another MMORPG in 2024 – the Western version of Bandai Namco’s anime MMO, Blue Protocol. However, the Western release of Blue Protocol was canceled in August and the Japanese servers are scheduled to shut down in January.

Despite Amazon’s reputation for developing and publishing MMOs, such as its ongoing projects like a Lord of the Rings MMO and console version of New World, the company is eager to explore other gaming genres. During Gamescom 2024, it was announced that Amazon would also publish King of Meat, a cooperative dungeon crawler game.
