As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for gritty, authentic stories set in the world of organized crime, I am thrilled to hear about the return of “Gomorrah” in the form of a prequel titled “Gomorrah – The Series. The Origins.” Having grown up on the mean streets of Naples myself, I can attest that this series will undoubtedly capture the raw, unfiltered essence of Neapolitan life during the 1970s.

The gripping Italian crime series ‘Gomorrah’, which gained significant popularity worldwide, returns with a new twist – it’s set in a different era.

Filming for “Gomorrah – The Series. The Origins,” the anticipated prequel to the popular crime drama, is slated to commence in early 2025 in Naples. This project was earlier announced and will be helmed by Marco D’Amore, who portrayed the ruthless character Ciro Di Marzio on the original series.

Damore, who has previously directed several episodes of the series and a prequel film titled “The Immortal” for “Gomorrah”, as well as the movies “Napoli Magica” and “Caracas”, officially announced on Tuesday that he will take charge of this new project. We at EbMaster have been granted exclusive access to his video announcement.

In the video you can see above, D’Amore explains that today we delve into the beginning of the story’s history. He emphasizes that, similar to its hyper-realistic predecessor, this six-episode “Gomorrah” prequel will be based squarely on actual events.

The “Gomorrah” backstory will narrate the ascension of mobster Pietro Savastano during the 1970s, a time when the Naples underworld was prevalent but less ruthless. It was more about dealing in contraband cigarettes rather than large quantities of drugs, as ITV-owned Cattleya’s lead producer, Riccardo Tozzi, previously disclosed.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Tozzi stated that ‘Gomorrah – The Series’ now carries an almost legendary status. He also expressed reservations about revisiting such an extraordinary topic.

However, the concept that emerged among the creative team behind this series, along with one of its key players, Marco, was so straightforward yet powerful that it inspired us to begin anew,” Tozzi explained.

In an olden-day Naples, Pietro was blissfully unaware that he would one day be known as Savastano, neither was Imma nor the lively group of unsuspecting young companions setting sail on his criminal journey. This is what Tozzi narrated further.

Nils Hartmann, EVP of Sky Studios Italy, expressed his delight: “It’s wonderful to have a talented individual, whom I respect not only as an actor but also as a director, rejoining our Gomorrah clan. Previously, this person was a main character.

Hartmann remarked, “From the start, Marco has been on our journey with us, and I’m confident that his vision will infuse a fresh vigor into an uncharted phase of our tale. Narrating Pietro Savastano’s youth in the prequel promises to be an exhilarating and daunting undertaking. It fills me with pride just thinking about it, and I can hardly wait to see the first shot called!

Leonardo Fasoli and Maddalena Ravagli, two of the authors from the initial “Gomorrah” series, are collaborating with D’Amore, who additionally acts as artistic director, alongside Roberto Saviano, the author of the successful book that served as the basis for the show’s narrative.

Some episodes of the series will be directed by regular D’Amore collaborator Francesco Ghiaccio.

The casting for the prequel hasn’t been revealed yet, but it’s anticipated that they’ll be tapping into the pool of promising local newcomers, who might even be amateur actors.

Originally aired on Sky in 2014, “Gomorrah” offered viewers an authentic glimpse into Naples’ criminal underbelly due to its extensive on-location filming. Not only did it gain massive popularity within Italy, but it has also been watched in 190 countries, including on HBO Max in the U.S. This means that people all over the world have had a chance to witness this captivating portrayal of crime and Neapolitan life.

Similar to the original, “Gomorrah – The Series: The Beginnings” is being developed by Sky Studios and Cattleya, a division of ITV Studios, and will be distributed worldwide by Beta Film.
