Animated Robin Origin Story ‘Dynamic Duo’ Set at DC Studios, Featuring Dick Grayson and Jason Todd

As a seasoned film enthusiast who has followed the DC Universe since its early days, I must say that the upcoming animated feature “Dynamic Duo” piques my interest significantly! The focus on Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, two iconic characters in their own right, is a refreshing take on the Dynamic Duo concept.

DC Studios is getting together the Dynamic Duo — just not the one you might expect.

Prior to the premiere of DC’s animated series “Max” titled “Creature Commandos,” the studio is embarking on its initial animated feature production, “Dynamic Duo,” in collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. Unlike centering around Batman and Robin, this movie will delve into the origins of Robin and Robin, which are Dick Grayson and Jason Todd respectively.

Matthew Aldrich, known for films like “Coco” and “Lightyear”, is scripting a new project to be produced by Matt Reeves’ production company, 6th & Idaho. However, this story will not be connected to Reeves’ ongoing Gotham universe as depicted in “The Batman” and “The Penguin”. Instead, it focuses on the strained friendship between characters Grayson and Todd, who were once associates, as they grapple with differing visions for their future paths. Contrary to earlier reports, the initial portrayal of these characters as thieves in the film is untrue. In the DC comics, following their tenures as Batman’s sidekicks, Robin (Grayson) evolves into Nightwing, while Jason transforms into the aggressive vigilante Red Hood.

The animated project, titled “Dynamic Duo,” will be managed by Swaybox from New Orleans. This company, led by married duo Arthur Mintz and Theresa Andersson, will take charge of directing and producing respectively. Known for their unique blend of live-action motion capture, stop-motion animation, and CG animation, this is an innovative approach to puppetry they’ve developed. With “Dynamic Duo,” their work will finally get the spotlight it deserves.

Together with Reeves and Andersson, James Gunn and Peter Safran, who serve as co-chiefs at DC Studios, are taking on the role of producers, while Michael Uslan assumes the position of executive producer.

The ‘Dynamic Duo’ signifies the initial venture by DC Studios since Gunn and Safran unveiled their lineup of movie and television productions back in early 2023.

Deadline first reported the news.
