As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for Westerns and a soft spot for tales of outlaws and lawmen, I must say that the renewal of “Billy the Kid” for its final season is music to my ears. Having grown up watching classics like “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” and more recently, “Peaky Blinders,” I am always eager for a well-crafted story about the Old West.
MGM+ has renewed “Billy the Kid” for Season 3, which will also be the show’s last season.
In the upcoming eighth installment of the show, featuring Tom Blyth portraying a renowned Old West bandit, there are plans for eight episodes. This announcement was made approximately two months following the end of Season 2.
The official description for Season 3 states:
Although the Lincoln County War has concluded, significant matters remain unresolved for Billy the Kid (Billy) and Sheriff Pat Garrett (Garrett). A reckoning is imminent. Billy continues to evade capture, while Garrett pursues him relentlessly, alive or dead. With a bounty on his head, Billy contemplates leaving New Mexico forever in pursuit of Dulcinea (Dulcinea), the woman he loves. However, he has personal grievances with Garrett, who has betrayed him, compelling him to stay. Meanwhile, Jesse Evans (Jesse), Billy’s friend, rival, and adversary, also dwells in Lincoln, seeking a new sense of purpose or redemption for his past transgressions. As the final chapter unfolds, Billy will fight tooth and nail to attain the justice he has long been denied, even if it costs him his life.
The show was developed by Michael Hirst, who additionally functions as its executive producer. Donald De Line serves as an executive producer through De Line Pictures, while Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey hold those roles for Amblin Television. The production company is a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios, Amblin Television, and De Line Pictures. Worldwide distribution of the series is handled by Amazon MGM Studios Distribution.
Michael Wright, head of MGM+, expressed his excitement about Season Two which was masterfully created by Michael Hirst, Donald De Line, Tom Blyth, and the rest of our talented cast. They enthralled viewers with the tumultuous events leading to the Lincoln County War, a time when Billy is fighting to keep his soul and the affection of his loved one. For Season Three, we’re eager to wrap up the captivating, cinematic tale of an enigmatic and frequently misconstrued figure from American history, ensuring a fitting conclusion, as MGM+ is renowned for doing.
I’m excited to be given the task of penning the third and concluding season of ‘Billy the Kid.’ It’s time to wrap up this captivating tale. Just like Billy was known for numerous things, including his knack for escaping from seemingly inescapable predicaments, now, as America’s Most Wanted, the game is truly rigged against him.” (Paraphrased)
