Apocalyptic Drama ‘Earth Abides,’ ‘Gladiators’ Format Among Mipcom Slate From Amazon MGM Studios

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the lineup unveiled by Amazon MGM Studios Distribution at this year’s Mipcom is nothing short of breathtaking! With a blend of fresh takes on classic franchises and innovative original concepts, it seems that the studio has truly outdone itself.

Amazon MGM Studios will be showcasing a wide array of series and films at Mipcom, from October 24th to 27th. Among the series are the apocalyptic drama “Earth Abides,” the final season of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” a reboot of “Gladiators,” and the popular quiz format “Are You Smarter Than…”. Additionally, they will be presenting new films such as “The Accountant 2,” “Mercy,” and a follow-up to “A Simple Favor” for distribution.

Approximately a year ago, our studio established its distribution branch primarily for the purpose of granting licenses for Amazon Originals, as well as movies and series from MGM’s theatrical releases, their TV shows, MGM+ Studios productions, and library titles to international distributors.

Amazon MGM Studios Distribution will introduce the limited television series “Earth Abides” to consumers. This modern adaptation of George R. Stewart’s science fiction novel shares the same title revolves around Alexander Ludwig (“Vikings”) and Jessica Frances Dukes (“Ozark”). After a lethal pandemic ravages the world, humanity is left barely surviving. In the wake of chaos, as civilization disintegrates, a handful of survivors cling to life in an attempt to halt their slide towards extinction.

Moreover, Amazon’s MGM Studios Distribution plans to showcase the sixth and concluding season of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” featuring Elisabeth Moss. Currently in production, this final season is set to debut in spring 2025 on Hulu within the United States.

Also on the studio’s Mipcom slate is the revitalized “Gladiators” format. This format, which sees Gladiators going head-to-head with Contenders in competitions of strength, speed and agility, took the U.K. by storm earlier this year on BBC One with 9.8 million viewers (28-day figure) in its first season. A second season has been ordered. In addition to the U.K. version of the show, Prime Video has ordered “American Gladiators” and TF1 has ordered a French version of the show.

Moreover, the “Are You Smarter Than…” game show format is also open for broadcast. This well-known format gets a fresh twist in the upcoming series “Can You Outsmart a Celebrity?,” which features American football player Travis Kelce as the host: one contestant will lean on a group of celebrities from both screen and sports to help them answer 11 questions across various subjects derived from elementary school curriculum, aiming to win a prize. “Can You Outsmart a Celebrity?” is set to debut on Amazon Prime Video on October 16.

Ultimately, Amazon’s MGM Studios has introduced “The GOAT,” a concept where 14 reality television legends reside in the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) Manor to engage in a competition for cash and the prestigious title of “Greatest of All Time.” The American adaptation of this program, hosted by Daniel Tosh, is streamed on Prime Video.

Films being launched for distribution include the comedy “You’re Cordially Invited,” starring Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon, slated to premiere on Prime Video on Jan. 30; Shane Black’s crime thriller “Play Dirty,” led by Mark Wahlberg and LaKeith Stanfield; the sequel to the film “A Simple Favor,” with returning cast members Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively and director Paul Feig; and “Levon’s Trade,” an action thriller starring Jason Statham and directed by David Ayer (“Suicide Squad”) from a screenplay adapted by Sylvester Stallone.

The distribution of Amazon MGM Studios will also include the upcoming sci-fi thriller “Mercy” starring Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson; the film version of Don Winslow’s novella “Crime 101,” featuring Chris Hemsworth, Barry Keoghan, Mark Ruffalo, and directed by Bart Layton (“American Animals”); the sequel to “The Accountant” titled “The Accountant 2,” led by Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal, and J.K. Simmons, under the direction of Gavin O’Connor (“Warrior”); and the heist comedy “The Pickup” with Eddie Murphy, Pete Davidson, Keke Palmer, and Eva Longoria in the main roles, directed by Tim Story (“The Blackening”).
