Moo Deng Fandom Sends Hippo Minion Prices Soaring In Final Fantasy XIV

As a long-time Final Fantasy 14 player, I’ve seen my fair share of market fluctuations, but nothing quite compares to the current Moo Deng mania. I remember when Gil was worth more than gold back in A Realm Reborn days! But this hippo calf minion fever has taken things to a whole new level.

If you haven’t heard already, everyone seems to be talking about Moo Deng, a cute pygmy hippo baby from the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand. This little creature has been creating a buzz on social media platforms and now, it has even made its way into online role-playing game Final Fantasy 14. The prices for the game’s hippo calf minion are reaching unprecedented heights due to Moo Deng’s growing fanbase in the game.

According to GamesRadar’s report, a user named Cerulean shared a market-board screenshot revealing that the price for hippo calf minions skyrocketed from 17,400 gil early in September to nearly 300,000 gil by the month’s end.

Square Enix has joined the excitement by sharing a gif that resembles the popular Khao Kheow Zoo videos featuring Moo Deng, but in a unique way.

In 2021, the newborn hippo was introduced with the Endwalker expansion and can be obtained by completing the level 85 Vanaspati dungeon’s final stage. However, due to its rare drops, the cute water-dwelling pet has high market prices. Before Moo Deng gained popularity, the average price for this minion was typically around 40,000 gil, but it varies depending on the server.

In unusual circumstances, a character from an older expansion tends to gain massive popularity, and that seems to be the case with Vanaspati right now. It’s highly expected that the Vanaspati dungeon will experience more successful runs than usual during the upcoming weeks as players continue to chase after the Moo Deng craze. However, this trend is likely to shift once a new viral sensation takes over.
