‘Death of a Comedian,’ Renowned Argentine Actor Diego Peretti’s Directorial Debut, Is Picked Up by FilmSharks (EXCLUSIVE)

As a movie buff with a penchant for international cinema and a soft spot for Argentine productions, I find myself thoroughly intrigued by the upcoming film “Death of a Comedian.” Diego Peretti, a versatile actor known for his work in comedies, dramas, and thrillers, stepping into the director’s chair for the first time with this feature film is an exciting prospect.

Slated to debut in 2025, “Death of a Comedian” (“La Muerte de un Comediante”), the initial directorial venture by acclaimed Argentine actor Diego Peretti, has been picked up for global distribution by FilmSharks.

Making a debut on TV show “The Pretenders” (2001-04), directed by Damián Szifrón, Peretti first gained significant recognition for his comedy roles, such as “It’s Not You, But Me.” However, he demonstrates great versatility, excelling in dramatic roles like Lucía Puenzo’s “The German Doctor” and suspenseful comedies like “The Heist of the Century.

Peretti collaborated with Javier Beltramino, a well-known name in the Argentine animation industry (“Rice and Matchsticks”), who previously served as a production manager at Telefonica Studios.

Currently in the editing stage, the movie features Peretti portraying Juan Debré, an actor who’s spent his entire career embodying the hero of a TV show, unaware of his authentic self. Upon receiving a grave health diagnosis, he escapes to Belgium, a place tied to his childhood idol – a once popular comic book character that has been forgotten with time. Desiring to become a real-life hero, he puts himself in harm’s way for a noble cause, asking if this could be his destiny.

Meeting up with three lively, young immigrants, he quickly gets involved in a task that might provide the answer he’s seeking.

Malena Villa, who is swiftly constructing an impressive resume, will soon be seen alongside other actors in the film “Death of a Comedian.” Her notable works include “El Angel,” “100 Days to Fall in Love,” “Matadero” and “The Wailing,” which garnered recognition at San Sebastian the previous year.

In order to depict the character’s existential dilemma, Peretti mentioned that they have opted for visual and storytelling elements that avoid heaviness, using comic aesthetics as a lens to peer into the void through a childlike perspective.

Our story’s unique perspective, coming from our main character, leads us along its course,” he explained, referencing surrealist René Magritte, who aimed to bring fresh perspectives to everyday objects. However, one might ask, how should one observe? Like a child, experiencing reality for the first time outside of themselves.
