Busan New Currents Title ‘Tale of the Land’ Unveils Trailer (EXCLUSIVE)

As a film enthusiast who has traveled far and wide, immersing myself in the rich tapestry of global cinema, I must say that the trailer for “Tale of the Land” has piqued my interest like none other. The unique setting on the island of Borneo, the intriguing blend of reality and fantasy, and the poignant theme of land conflict resonate deeply with me, having explored diverse landscapes and cultures myself.

The media company KawanKawan Media from Indonesia has recently revealed the teaser for “The Tale of the Land,” a film directed by Loeloe Hendra marking his first directorial venture. This movie is one of the films chosen to compete in the New Currents competition at the 2024 Busan International Film Festival.

The movie, titled “Story of the Terrain,” takes place on Borneo’s enchanting shores and follows May, a Dayak girl, as she embarks on a rite of passage journey influenced by indigenous communities dealing with disputes over land, intertwined with magical elements. After her parents perish in a land conflict, May becomes fearful of setting foot on dry ground. Instead, she dwells with her grandfather in a waterbound home on a lake, where the majority of the film unfolds.

Hendra expressed: “The story ‘Tale of the Land’ is about the transformation of our land. It’s a blend of my childhood fantasies and the contemporary societal landscape of Kalimantan. My goal in sharing this tale is to illustrate that significant changes and shifts have occurred.

In this movie, we find Shenina Cinnamon and Arswendy Bening Swara taking the lead roles. Both have garnered significant international acclaim for their recent acting stints. Cinnamon was featured in Yosep Anggi Noen’s 2023 film “24 Hours with Gaspar,” while Swara clinched the best actor award at the 2022 Marrakech International Film Festival for Makbul Mubarak’s “Autobiography.” Following their successful collaboration in Garin Nugroho’s “Badrun & Loundri,” they are joining forces again. Indonesian actors Angga Yunanda and Yusuf Mahardika are also part of the ensemble cast.

The filmmakers Yulia Evina Bhara and Amerta Kusuma, renowned for movies such as “Autobiography,” which won at Venice, and “Tiger Stripes,” a Cannes-winning production, encountered distinct production difficulties. Bhara explained: “Filming ‘Tale of the Land’ was done on an inland river delta that undergoes significant changes during the rainy seasons, peaking with the highest water flow. Our primary task was to determine the optimal time for filming, specifically when the water level is at its maximum discharge.

The movie is jointly produced by Popple Pictures from the Philippines, with Armi Cacanindin serving as a co-producer, and Aview Images from Taiwan, who have Shee Heng Kuek and Alice You on board as co-producers.
