‘Saturday Night Live’ Season 50 Premiere Scores 4 Year High in Viewership

As a seasoned critic who’s seen more than a few late-night comedy shows under the moonlight, I must say that Saturday Night Live (SNL) has always been a staple in my laughter diet. The 50th season opener was nothing short of a triumph, drawing in viewers like bees to honey. It’s been a while since an SNL premiere garnered such viewership, and that’s saying something.

“Saturday Night Live” kicked off its 50th season on a ratings high note.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share my excitement over the exceptional viewership numbers of the “SNL” episode that graced our screens on September 28. With a staggering 5.3 million viewers tuning in according to Nielsen Live+Same Day ratings, this season premiere marked the highest number of viewers for an “SNL” opener since 2020. To top it off, NBCUniversal announced that this episode holds the record as the most-watched “SNS” ever on Peacock during its initial weekend, although they didn’t disclose any additional details. Quite simply, the latest “SNL” has left an indelible mark and set new standards for Saturday night entertainment!

In this week’s installment, Jean Smart served as the host alongside musical guest Jelly Roll, marking their debut on the extended NBC comedy series “Saturday Night Live”. The initial scene starred Maya Rudolph portraying Vice President Kamala Harris, Andy Samberg enacting Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, Jim Gaffigan as Governor Tim Walz, and Dana Carvey impersonating President Joe Biden. It was previously announced in July that Rudolph would be a recurring cast member for the current season, given her past performances of Harris on the show. She received an Emmy for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series for her 2019 portrayal of Harris and reprised the role during the 2020 election period.

The installment featured Bowen Yang donning the beloved baby hippo costume of Moo Deng, while he additionally hosted a fictional talk show skit titled “The TalkTalk Show,” featuring Charli XCX as a guest.

For the current season, we have some exciting lineups! Performers like Nate Bargatze, Ariana Grande, John Mulaney, and Michael Keaton are set to host, while Stevie Nicks, Coldplay, Billie Eilish, and Chappell Roan will be our musical guests.

On Saturdays, “Saturday Night Live” hits the screens, a show that’s jointly produced by Broadway Video. Lorne Michaels, its genius creator and dedicated executive producer, is the one who brings it all together.
