Overwatch community turns on Jeff Kaplan for reportedly botching OW2’s development

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Jeff Kaplan‘s departure from Overwatch was not the catastrophic event that some players made it out to be. In fact, his tenure as game director was fraught with questionable decisions and lackluster content releases, especially during the development of Overwatch 2.

Players of Overwatch 2 have shifted their perspective towards the game’s former director, Jeff Kaplan, following a recent report suggesting that he significantly mismanaged the game’s development.

Over the years, Jeff Kaplan has been well-adored as the charismatic figurehead behind Overwatch. In his role as director, he captivated gamers through his engaging developer updates and infectious enthusiasm for the brand.

Prior to the launch of Overwatch 2, Kaplan decided to part ways with Blizzard Entertainment. This news brought disappointment to many fans as they were unaware of the reasons behind his decision, given that he was still involved in the production of the follow-up to his game.

On September 29th, journalist Jason Schreier conducted a question-and-answer session (AMA) on Reddit to discuss his latest book titled ‘PLAY NICE: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment.’ He also disclosed some details about the development of Overwatch 2 during this session.

After the launch of Overwatch 1 (OW1), Team 4 encountered a challenge: they had an overwhelming amount of tasks on their hands. They needed to manage three main responsibilities concurrently:

Bobby Kotick proposed a solution to the problem by suggesting that Team 4 should expand their workforce significantly, similar to his Call of Duty team. He also recommended creating a second team to focus on Overwatch 2 while the original team continued working on Overwatch 1 (or vice versa). However, Kaplan and Chacko Sonny were hesitant due to their commitment to the culture they had established, fearing that adding more people could lead to complications and inefficient development. This decision led to various issues as time passed.

In the process of creating Overwatch 2, development on the original Overwatch virtually stopped, leading to no fresh character or map introductions for the multiplayer shooter.

Furthermore, it appears that the sequel’s primary emphasis on extensive player-versus-environment (PvE) content was eliminated entirely. Subsequently, it has been reported that the intended story campaign was supposedly discarded following the initial release of missions, which did not perform well in sales.

When they learned that Kaplan’s choice may have slowed Down Overwatch’s progress, fans began criticizing him and holding him responsible for the issues experienced in the game.

I always had a hard time understanding people praising Jeff and calling his departure – the worst thing that could have happened to the game.

Yet we had content draught and GOATS / Double Shield meta for years under his leadership… 😐

Popcorp stated, ‘I’ve struggled to comprehend when people praise Jeff and consider his departure as the most detrimental event for the game.’ However, under his leadership, we experienced a prolonged content drought and the dominance of the GOATS/Double Shield meta for years.

“It seems as if Overwatch 1 might have had more substantial content if Jeff had employed additional team members. Incredibly, it appears that Jeff Kaplan’s role may not have been as exceptional as some believed; instead, he could be seen as the one responsible. Who would have thought?” Another individual added.

Massive Jeff Kaplan L. This dude was adored by the public for being funny on camera for devblogs while making shit decisions like this (and around balance philosophies) in private to the detriment of the game. He did not deserve the public praise he got and still gets from the…

“Jeff Kaplan, a well-liked figure due to his comedic on-camera presence during devblogs, has made decisions that aren’t popular behind the scenes, affecting the game negatively. In his opinion, the public admiration and praise Jeff still receives from casual fans doesn’t match with the private choices he’s made regarding balance issues.

Apart from the current blunder, Jason Schreier has uncovered other significant mistakes as well. Fan outrage ensued when they discovered that Netflix had terminated the Overwatch, Diablo, and World of Warcraft series following Blizzard’s lawsuit against the company for recruiting former CFO Spencer Neumann, who was previously with Blizzard.
