As a seasoned gamer and DC Universe fan with over two decades of comic book lore under my belt, I must say, the casting of Michael Kelly as The Penguin’s enforcer, Johnny Viti, in this new Elseworlds project is nothing short of brilliant! While it might be a stretch from his role as Steve Lombard in Man of Steel, Kelly has proven time and again that he can bring any character to life.
Although The Penguin isn’t part of Zack Snyder’s universe, an actor who played a character in Man of Steel has made the move to James Gunn’s DC Universe by taking on a different role.
In the Marvel films, it’s not uncommon for an actor to take on more than one character.
In both Eternals and Captain Marvel, Gemma Chan portrayed distinct characters; Michelle Yeoh made appearances in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Shang-Chi; and Mahershala Ali is set to assume the role of Blade following his performance as Cottonmouth within Luke Cage.
Just like DC, it’s been over a decade since the actor first appeared in Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel, and now, he’s taken on a fresh character in the upcoming series, The Penguin.
Michael Kelly took on the roles of both Steve Lombard, a sports writer at The Daily Planet, and Johnny Viti, a thug working for the Falcone family under the guise of The Penguin, turning into an antagonist in the process.
Although characters like Lois Lane (played by Amy Adams) and Perry White (portrayed by Laurence Fishburne) from Man of Steel reappeared in subsequent films, Kelly was not included in any other movies.
The DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which began with the release of Man of Steel in 2013, has come to an end. Its final chapter was Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, released last year, marking the conclusion of a controversial period in the world of superhero films.
Currently, Gunn and Safran are more certain about the direction they want to take the studio in the future. They’ve started with a low-key debut of Creature Commandos, and then the DC Universe will officially kick off with Superman, paving the way for Supergirl, The Authority, and The Brave and the Bold.
These stories featuring The Batman and The Penguin are classified as Elseworlds tales, which essentially means they don’t align with the main DC Universe timeline. In simpler terms, they have their own unique narratives that aren’t connected to films like Joker 2 or any other movie or TV show in the DC Universe outside their individual story arcs.
