Hideo Kojima Teases Death Stranding Movie And His Movie Ambitions

As a seasoned gamer with decades of immersion in the intricate worlds crafted by Hideo Kojima, I eagerly await his next masterpiece. The news that Death Stranding is getting a movie adaptation, while not unexpected given its star-studded cast and captivating narrative, leaves me with a mix of anticipation and trepidation.

In 2015, Hideo Kojima, the brains behind Metal Gear Solid, established his own studio, Kojima Productions, before releasing Death Stranding in 2019, a game with an impressive cast like Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, Troy Baker, and Lindsey Wagner. Given this, it was anticipated that a Death Stranding movie might be forthcoming. However, even though A24 secured the rights for a Death Stranding film adaptation, Kojima has no plans to direct it, as he’s currently focused on creating more video games.

Kojima shared with Variety that his upcoming works are like his children and he has a deep affection for films. He desires these projects to be something film enthusiasts can truly appreciate. Although he won’t be the director, he will oversee the plot development and support the team in making it happen. However, with three ongoing projects at the moment, he cannot personally direct. Instead, he plans on working closely with a trusted director to ensure the project’s success. Additionally, there are multiple Death Stranding adaptation projects in progress, but Kojima also has a separate movie script that he penned and is eager to bring to life; however, due to his current workload, he won’t be able to direct it himself.

In simpler terms, Kojima is teaming up with Jordan Peele for their upcoming game titled OD. However, he expressed that he prefers to partner with Peele on a brand-new project instead of the Death Stranding film, as he wants to explore fresh ideas together.

Kojima also mentioned that he has close connections with directors such as Guillermo del Toro, Nicolas Winding Refn, and George Miller, who feature in the game Death Stranding, and they often discuss collaborating on projects. He explained that while movies and video games are currently separate entities, this distinction will likely blur in the near future. Instead of adapting each other’s works into different formats, Kojima emphasized that they aim to create something entirely new together.

Kojima himself hinted at steering Kojima Productions towards an expansive era, one that would enable us to explore opportunities beyond just game development. He’s particularly excited about collaborating with exceptionally skilled individuals worldwide on these new ventures.

Kojima stated, “It might be a film, a game, or something completely unexpected.” He exclaimed, “I won’t perish until that time comes! I don’t believe what I’m doing is particularly extraordinary!
