Caution: spoilers ahead for The Legend Of Vox Machina season 4.
Wow, things are moving fast in season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina! It feels like just yesterday Percy was losing sleep over some spooky undead issues, and now it’s turned into a massive, world-threatening plot that spans dimensions. Seeing them reconnect with Kevdak really set the stage, but episode 9, “The Temple of Truth,” is where everything truly clicked for me – I finally understood how serious this all is!
For the first half of season 4, Vox Machina clashed with the Unalive Five. But in the episode “The Temple of Truth,” they finally went on the offensive, attacking the temple itself to stop the Whispered One from winning. The plan, though complex, was straightforward for characters like Percy and Taryon: one team would fight the undead enemies while a magical orb blocked all spellcasting. Then, Percy’s team would detonate explosives under the temple, collapsing it and permanently disabling the orb.
The plan didn’t fully work. Vox Machina managed to damage the Unalive Five and destroy the temple, but they lost Grog and Pike in the process. Losing two members is a huge setback for the team, and it’s hard to imagine a worse moment for them during the series so far. However, even more important issues are now coming into focus.
Is Grog Really Dead?
While his companions escape, Grog is held back by Death Knight, one of the Unalive Five. The Death Knight throws Grog into a deadly spinning orb – as seen in The Legend of Vox Machina season 4, episode 9, anything touching this orb is instantly killed. However, those with a specific amulet can use the orb to travel from the mortal world to Thar Amphala, where the Whispered One hides.
Grog isn’t protected by an amulet when he reaches for the orb, and the show clearly depicts him being completely destroyed as he’s pulled towards it. This means Grog is not just dead – his body is gone entirely. While Vox Machina has successfully brought characters back from death before by reuniting their souls with their bodies, Grog’s total annihilation suggests that those methods won’t work for him.
Despite Grog’s apparent death, it’s probably too soon to assume he’s gone for good. Considering Percy and Vex were brought back to life earlier in the series, death isn’t necessarily permanent in The Legend of Vox Machina. While the fact that his body is missing makes things difficult, it seems unlikely Travis Willingham won’t be back before the season ends. However, Vox Machina should be cautious – past resurrections have come with significant costs, as Vax’s lingering blight proves. If Grog does return, his revival will likely create new problems.
Whether Grog ultimately meets his end or returns as an undead warrior, The Legend of Vox Machina is heading into new and unpredictable territory. Although Grog does die in the original Critical Role campaign, it happens much later in the story, so fans of the show won’t see it coming.
What Next For Pike?
Okay, so things got really rough at the Temple of Truth. After Grog went down, Pike was absolutely heartbroken, but instead of running, she just… walked straight into this exploding orb of energy. It was so brave, but terrifying to watch! Percy glanced back as he was getting out, and saw her confidently stepping into this black cloud. Luckily, she had that amulet, the one needed to travel safely to Thar Amphala, so it wasn’t a total loss – though it definitely felt like saying goodbye. It wasn’t as final as Grog’s fate, but she was definitely heading off on a solo journey.
Honestly, after watching this, I’m starting to think a quiet life might have been better for Pike. She’s got this powerful artifact, Mythcarver, sure, but she’s facing down five incredibly dangerous foes – the Unalive Five – and the terrifying Whispered One, all on her own. No matter how much she wants revenge, the odds are stacked so high against her, it’s easily the most dangerous situation I’ve ever seen her in. It’s a thrilling watch, but I’m seriously worried about her chances.
Season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina has been particularly difficult for Pike. She was already upset about the group splitting up, as hinted at in Grog’s song about her partner feeling down. Then, she began to question her faith and distanced herself from the Everlight. On top of that, she dealt with the loss of her grandfather, Wilhand, and a complicated reconnection with Scanlan. All of this has led Pike to pursue revenge against the Whispered One with a dangerous disregard for her own safety and the well-being of others.
Pike is forced to watch someone she cares about die, and the tragedy is made worse by the fact that her own violent tendencies initially prevented their escape – meaning she feels partly to blame. Already leaning towards darkness, Pike’s future now seems even more uncertain. Consumed by grief and a desire for revenge, she’s vulnerable, and a manipulative villain like the Whispered One could easily take advantage of her state of mind.
What Is The Whispered One’s Plan?
Throughout season 4, Vox Machina has been piecing together the Whispered One’s plan, and episode 9 reveals a crucial new part of it.
The animated series The Legend of Vox Machina established that the Whispered One is a powerful lich with a history of trying to become a god. He was originally defeated and exiled to another dimension by heroes, including an ancestor of Pike. Now, he’s making another move to achieve godhood and create a world without death. To grow stronger and escape his prison in Thar Amphala, he’s sacrificing his followers – members of the Temple of Truth are being led into his realm.
In season 4, episode 6, Gideon warned Delilah about Wilhand, hinting that he was almost recruited by the Whispered One. It seems Wilhand unknowingly plays a part in the villain’s plans, possibly due to his family’s history with Exandria’s past heroes. This makes Pike’s solo journey into enemy territory even riskier as we approach the end of The Legend of Vox Machina season 4.
